Multi-shelf DCS utilizing a single TID

Purpose

The multi-shelf DCS feature provides a method of adding additional DS1 and DS3 (TMUX) I/O capacity to a system, through the addition of DS1 and/or DS3 add/drop sub-shelves, while maintaining the ability to externally manage the entire multi-shelf system via a single TID. Most features and provisioning currently supported on a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX are supported on the main shelf in the multi-shelf DCS configuration.

Multi-shelf requirements

A main shelf must be equipped with VLF mains to support sub-shelves. The pack types supported in the add/drop sub-shelves are restricted. Each sub-shelf type (DS1 or DS3) supports a fixed set of cross-connections between the DS1/DS3 ports and the main ports in the subshelf. The user can provision cross-connections independently to each DS1/DS3 port in the subshelf. The transmission link between the main shelf and each sub-shelf is a unidirectional, non-revertive 1+1 protected OC-n link (OC-12 for a DS1 sub-shelf and OC-192 for a DS3 sub-shelf).

Maximum number of sub-shelves

Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX supports either

When the total number of sub-shelves exceeds the limit, the sub-shelf commands are not available from the main shelf.

DS1 sub-shelf

A fully-populated DS1 sub-shelf supports up to 4 pairs of LNW801 packs in the function group slots and one pair of OC-12 packs (LNW48, LNW50, LNW54, LNW203) in the main slots. Any other pack is alarmed as an unexpected circuit pack. The LNW801 ports are configured as DS1 ports. E1 interfaces are not supported. The OC-n ports on the main packs are configured as a unidirectional, nonrevertive 1+1 protection group.

DS1 sub-shelf cross-connects

The following 2-way cross-connectivity is fixed within a DS1 sub-shelf. These cross-connections provide non-blocking access from the main shelf to all 224 DS1s in the sub-shelf.

DS3 sub-shelf

A fully-populated DS3 subshelf supports up to 4 pairs of LNW20 packs in the function slots and one pair of OC-192 packs (LNW56, LNW58, LNW502) in the main slots. Any other pack is alarmed as an unexpected circuit pack. The LNW20 ports are configured as ported DS3 ports. Both channelized and unchannelized operation is supported. The OC-n ports on the main packs are configured as a unidirectional, non-revertive 1+1 protection group.

DS3 sub-shelf cross-connects

The following 2-way cross-connectivity is fixed within a DS3 sub-shelf. These cross-connections provide non-blocking access from the main shelf to all 192 DS3s/5376 DS1s in the sub-shelf.
