Procedure 6-5.2: Provision External timing mode

Important!

This is not a stand-alone procedure. Perform this procedure only as directed by Procedure 6-5: Network Element synchronization provisioning.

Steps

Complete the following steps to provision the network element Timing Mode to External.

1

From the System View menu, select Configuration → Timing/Sync.

Result:

The Configure Timing/Sync window opens.

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

Changing the System Synchronization Characteristic parameter of an in-service system may affect system operations. Circuit pack failures and service interruptions may occur.

The System Synchronization Characteristic parameter is generally provisioned when the system is integrated into a network. Do not change the System Synchronization Characteristic parameter unless you are reconfiguring the network and have been directed to do so.

If required, provision the System Synchronization Characteristic according to the work instructions.

For more information about the System Synchronization Characteristic, refer to System synchronization characteristic.

4

From the Timing Mode drop-down menu, select External (initial value).

5

For Output Timing, select Disabled (initial value).

Result:

With the Timing Mode set to External, and Output Timing set to Disabled, the synchronization mode is set to External.

6

Provision the Clock Mode Switching, Reference Switching, Reference 1 Alarm Severity Assignment Profile and Reference 2 Alarm Severity Assignment Profile parameters according to the work instructions.

For more information about clock mode switching and reference switching, refer to Clock mode switching and Reference switching.

7

Click on the Timing Input Ports tab.

8

Important!

Synchronization Status Messages on DS1 external references are only supported when the ESF frame format is provisioned. Synchronization Status Messages on E1 external references are only supported when the CRC4 frame format is provisioned.

Provision the required REF-1, REF-2, and SSM (Synchronization Status Messages) parameters for the timing input reference signals according to the work instructions.

9

Click OK.

Result:

A warning message may appear. Click Yes to execute the command.
