Procedure 7-15: Provision serial port CIT-1 parameters

- Overview

Use this procedure to perform the following:

  • Provision the baud rate for the serial port.

  • Enable or disable command echo mode.

  • Assign OS type application context IDs (ACIDs) to the serial port.

Assigning an ACID to the serial port determines the TL1 autonomous message types to be output by the local network element (NE), and any TL1-RNEs (remote NEs) accessed through the serial port.

Important!

Changing the serial port parameters may affect access to the serial port.

- Privilege level

An Administration, General, Maintenance, or Reports Only user may provision a serial port only if they are logged in to that serial port. A Privileged user may provision a serial port while logged in to that serial port or while not logged in to that serial port.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin and Required equipment in this chapter.

  2. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure.

Steps

Perform the following steps to provision the CIT-1 serial port.

1

From the System View menu, select Administration → Data Communications.

Result:

The Data Communications window opens.

2

Select the Serial Port tab.

Result:

The Serial Port parameters appear.

3

Note the Access State of the selected CIT Port. If the Access State is In Service you may continue to provision accessible parameters for the serial port. If the Access State is Lockout, only a Privileged user may provision the parameters at this time.

An Access State of Lockout indicates that login access to all ports has been locked out except for Privileged users.

Procedure 7-4: Enable/disable lockout security state

4

Provision the Serial Port Parameters as required.

  • Echo Mode – Specifies whether or not TL1 messages received on the port are echoed back to the user. Values are enabled or disabled. The WaveStar® CIT temporarily disables the echo when launched and re-enables it when closed. Enabling the Echo after launching the WaveStar® CIT can cause the WaveStar® CIT to operate improperly.

  • Baud Rate – Specifies the baud rate at which TL1 messages are transmitted/received on the port. Values are 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600 (default), or 19200.

Changing the baud rate terminates any active login sessions on the selected port.

  • OS Type – Only Privileged users may assign/change ACIDs. Specifies the Application Context Identifier from the following values:
    • TL1PeerComm (By default, no autonomous messages)

    • TL1Maintenance (By default, all autonomous messages except for Database changes)

    • TL1MemoryAdministration (By default, Database Change messages only)

    • TL1Test (By default, all autonomous messages except for PM reports) TL1Test is the default OS Type for cit-1.

    • TL1CR (By default, no autonomous messages possible)

    • TL1OTHER1 (By default, all autonomous messages except report PM)

    • TL1OTHER2 (By default, no autonomous messages)

5

Click Apply, read the warning message, then click Yes to execute the command.

Important!

If you changed the baud rate setting, you will be logged off the system and the system view will close. Changing the OS Type on a port logs out any active user on the port.

Other serial port provisioning takes effect at the current session only after a command is sent to the NE. Click the Alarm List button from the System View menu to send a command to the NE.

6

If you changed the CIT baud rate setting, you must now change the COM port baud rate setting for the WaveStar® CIT. From the WaveStar® CIT network view, select Administration → Serial COM Selection.

7

Select the serial port (COM-1 or COM-2) and Baud Rate setting used for serial communication. Click OK to change the setting.

Important!

The baud rate setting must be the same as the NE CIT port setting.
