DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

If the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf is carrying service, service will be interrupted when the cables are removed from the VLIU interface unit in this procedure.

Remove all service from the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf before performing this procedure. Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) User Provisioning Guide.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Required equipment in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge information Chapter 1, Safety.

Steps

Complete the following steps to replace a VLIU interface unit with the same type interface unit.

1

Label all cables connecting to the VLIU interface unit. These include:

  • Power (−VA, +VA, GND, −VB, +VB)

  • Miscellaneous Discrete Outputs (MDO 1, 2, 3, 4, M1, M2)

  • Miscellaneous Discrete Inputs (MDI 1, 2, 3, 4)

  • DS1/E1 Timing Outputs/Inputs (TMG M1, GND, M2)

  • Office Alarms (ALARM MN-V, MN-A, MJ-V, MJ-A)

  • Serial Interface (RS232 M1, M2)

  • DS1/E1/Fast Ethernet Interface (GRP A)

  • DS3/E3 Interface (GRP B)

  • Fast Ethernet Interface (GRP C)

  • Time of Day Interface (ToD) (VLIU3 interface unit only)

2

Remove the following cables from the VLIU interface unit in any order. It may be necessary to untie the cables from the cable tie bar.

  • Miscellaneous Discrete Outputs (MDO 1, 2, 3, 4, M1, M2)

  • Miscellaneous Discrete Inputs (MDI 1, 2, 3, 4)

  • Office Alarms (ALARM MN-V, MN-A, MJ-V, MJ-A)

  • Serial Interface (RS232 M1, M2)

3

Remove the DS1/E1 Timing Output/Input cables (TMG M1, GND, M2) from the VLIU interface unit. It may be necessary to untie the cable from the cable tie bar.

4

Remove the DS1/E1/Fast Ethernet interface cables (GRP A) from the VLIU interface unit. It may be necessary to untie the cables from the cable tie bar.

5

Remove the DS3/E3 interface cables (GRP B) from the VLIU interface unit. It may be necessary to untie the cables from the cable tie bar.

6

Remove the Fast Ethernet interface cables (GRP C) from the VLIU interface unit. It may be necessary to untie the cables from the cable tie bar.

7

Important!

This step applies to VLIU3 interface units only.

If required, remove the Time of Day (ToD) cables from the VLIU interface unit. It may be necessary to untie the cables from the cable tie bar.

8

Important!

The power for both the A and B feeders must be removed from the shelf.

Remove power from the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf by performing the appropriate operation.

If power source is a...

Then...

AC/DC converter,

Unplug the AC/DC converter from the AC power outlet.

Battery Distribution Fuse Bay (BDFB),

Remove/disconnect the fuses.

Battery Distribution Circuit Breaker Bay (BDCBB)

Turn off the breakers.

Result:

Both A PWR ON and B PWR ON LEDs on the front of the fan unit extinguish.

Reference:

Refer to the user documentation for the AC/DC converter, BDFB, or BDCBB for more information.

9

Disconnect the power cables from the POWER terminal block on the VLIU interface unit.

10

Using a screwdriver, loosen the captive screws on the left and right sides of the VLIU interface unit.

11

Pull the left and right faceplate latch levers simultaneously rotating toward the center of the shelf, and remove the VLIU interface unit.

12

With the faceplate latch levers in the open position (latch levers pulled out and at a 45 degree angle to faceplate), insert the replacement VLIU interface unit into the slot aligning the left and right edges of the VLIU interface unit with the shelf guides. Slide the VLIU interface unit into the slot until the faceplate latch levers engage the shelf pins. Push the left and right faceplate latch levers simultaneously rotating toward the sides of shelf until the VLIU interface unit is fully seated.

13

Using a screwdriver, tighten the captive screws on the left and right sides of the replacement VLIU interface unit.

14

Reconnect the power cables to the POWER terminal block on the VLIU interface unit. Use a torque screwdriver set to 0.5 Newton meter (4.4 lb-in) to tighten.

15

Apply power to the shelf by performing the appropriate operation.

If power source is a...

Then...

AC/DC converter,

Plug the AC/DC converter from the AC power outlet.

Battery Distribution Fuse Bay (BDFB),

Install/Connect the fuses.

Battery Distribution Circuit Breaker Bay (BDCBB)

Turn on the breakers.

Reference:

Refer to the user documentation for the AC/DC converter, BDFB, or BDCBB for more information.

16

At the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 end of the power cables, use a voltmeter and measure the voltage on the power cable connectors between −VA and +VA. Then measure the voltage between −VB and +VB.

Reference:

Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Installation and System Turn-Up Guide for detailed voltage specifications.

17

Verify that both the A PWR ON and B PWR ON LEDs on the front of the fan unit are lighted.

18

Important!

This step applies to VLIU3 interface units only.

If required, reconnect the Time of Day (ToD) cables based on the labels placed on them when they were removed.

19

Reconnect the Fast Ethernet interface cables (GRP C) based on the labels placed on them when they were removed.

20

Reconnect the DS3/E3 interface cables (GRP B) based on the labels placed on them when they were removed.

21

Reconnect the DS1/E1/Fast Ethernet interface cables (GRP A) based on the labels placed on them when they were removed.

22

Reconnect the DS1/E1 Timing Output/Input cables (TMG M1, GND, M2) based on the labels placed on them when they were removed.

23

Reconnect the following cables in any order based on the labels placed on them when they were removed.

  • Miscellaneous Discrete Outputs (MDO 1, 2, 3, 4, M1, M2)

  • Miscellaneous Discrete Inputs (MDI 1, 2, 3, 4)

  • Office Alarms (ALARM MN-V, MN-A, MJ-V, MJ-A)

  • Serial Interface (RS232 M1, M2)
