Procedure 4-6: Install DS3/EC1 circuit packs

- Overview

Use this procedure to install the following DS3/EC1 circuit packs:

  • LNW16 12DS3/EC1

  • LNW19/19B 48DS3/EC1

The LNW19 is DA'd and is no longer available

Important!

The high-density LNW19/19B 48DS3/EC1 circuit pack is only compatible with the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX High Capacity Shelf (DMX-HC-20A, DMX-HC-30A, or DMX-HC-30A-CE Shelf Type). The standard Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX Shelf does not support the high-density LNW19/19B 48DS3/EC1 circuit pack. If a high-density LNW19/19B 48DS3/EC1 circuit pack is installed in the standard Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX Shelf, the system will not recognize the circuit pack as an allowable type.

To determine the shelf type, select View → Equipment, highlight Shelf, and click Select to obtain the shelf details.

It is assumed that the DS3/EC-1 cables have already been installed. Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) Installation Manual, 365-372-304 for cabling information.

Equipage guidelines

The system does not support mixing standard density LNW16 12DS3/EC1 and high-density LNW19/19B 48DS3/EC1 circuit packs in the same Function group. The circuit packs in a Function group must be the same circuit pack type. For example, both circuit packs in a Function group must be standard density LNW16 12DS3/EC1 circuit packs, or both circuit packs must be high-density LNW19/19B 48DS3/EC1 circuit packs. If the circuit packs in a Function group are different circuit pack types, the system reports an unexpected CP type alarm and service may be impacted.

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged, General, Maintenance, or Reports Only user to complete this procedure.

- Before you begin

Prior to beginning this procedure:

  1. Refer to Required equipment and Before you begin in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  3. Ensure that DS3/EC1 circuit packs are available for installation.

  4. If installing high-density LNW19/19B 48DS3/EC1 circuit packs in the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX High Capacity Shelf, verify that the new DS3/EC-1 cables are installed to the bottom connectors (J1-J8) and middle connectors (J20-J27) of the shelf backplane as required. Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) Installation Manual, 365-372-304 for cabling information.

Steps

Complete the following steps to install DS3/EC1 circuit packs.

1

Important!

If the Main slots are equipped with LNW26B, 28, 77, or 121B-159B OC-48 OLIU circuit packs and LNW19/19B DS3/EC1 circuit packs are installed in Function groups A, B, or C, then STS-1 #25 through STS-1 #48 are not available for cross-connections.

Determine the Function group slots (A, B, C, or D) being equipped with DS3/EC1 circuit packs.

2

Determine from office records or circuit order the length of the DS3/EC-1 cabling between the shelf and the DSX-3 panel or equivalent connection point and any other circuit pack parameters to be set.

3

If required, set the jumper on the LNW16 12DS3/EC1 circuit pack(s) for either DS3 or EC-1 service as illustrated in Figure 4-7, Jumper settings for LNW16.

Figure 4-7: Jumper settings for LNW16
Jumper settings for LNW16

Important!

The LNW19/19B 48DS3/EC1 circuit packs do not have the illustrated jumper; the LNW19/19B circuit pack defaults to DS3 upon installation.

Port provisioning using the WaveStar® CIT is supported. The electrical interface (EIF) parameter has possible values of DS3 or EC-1. If you set the jumper on the LNW16 and therefore the whole pack for DS3 or EC-1, you can still provision the ports individually for either DS3 or EC-1 service. The jumper setting only determines how the ports will come up during the initial installation of the circuit pack.

4

Open the faceplate latches and seat the DS3/EC1 circuit pack in the required Function slot by applying steady pressure to both faceplate latches.

Result:

The FAULT LED on the DS3/EC1 circuit pack lights for approximately 30 seconds then goes off and then ACTIVE LED lights, indicating successful installation. (Firmware updates may take place that add additional wait time.)

Select View → Refresh System View and the circuit pack appears in the WaveStar® CIT System View indicating successful installation.

5

Is a second (protection) DS3/EC1 circuit pack required in the companion Function slot?

If...

Then...

Yes

Continue with Step 6.

No

Verify that the companion Function slot is equipped with a circuit pack, a 177D Application Blank, or LNW98 Detectable Blank circuit pack.

If the companion Function slot is unequipped, insert a 177D Application Blank or LNW98 Detectable Blank circuit pack into the slot. If an LNW98 Detectable Blank circuit pack was installed, select View → Refresh System View and the circuit pack appears in the WaveStar® CIT System View.

Proceed to Step 7.

6

Open the faceplate latches and seat the second (protection) DS3/EC1 circuit pack in the companion Function slot by applying steady pressure to both faceplate latches.

Result:

The FAULT LED on the DS3/EC1 circuit pack lights for approximately 30 seconds then goes off, indicating successful installation. (Firmware updates may take place that add additional wait time.)

Select View → Refresh System View and the circuit pack appears in the WaveStar® CIT System View indicating successful installation.

7

From the System View window, click the Alarm List button to verify that no alarms, loopbacks, protection switch lockouts, or protection switches are present for the ports on the circuit packs just installed.

Result:

The NE Alarm List appears. No alarms should be present for the DS3/EC1 circuit packs just installed.

8

If required at this time, provision the circuit pack and/or port parameters.
