Procedure 11-1: Establishing Ethernet services

- Overview

Use this procedure for examples on provisioning Ethernet services.

This procedure provides references to numerous examples for provisioning Ethernet services. They are intended to be used as reference only to provide you with general Ethernet related provisioning. The examples given may not match your particular configuration. It is impossible to provide examples for all the configurations you may use.

Important!

This procedure assumes that the network system has already been established with all nodes of the network properly equipped and operating for standard SONET transmission.

Establishing/Removing Service

Use the examples provided in these procedures for establishing service. When removing service follow the reverse of the procedures.

Important!

Under some circumstances, constant pause frames may be transmitted to the link partner when using the LNW63/64/74/87 circuit packs for service. When establishing service, if packets are being transmitted to the port before the circuit has been established with cross-connections and enabled tributaries, stuck pause frames may be sent to the link partner. When disabling service, if enough packets were previously transmitted to the port or continue to be transmitted to the port, stuck pause frames may be sent to the link partner.

  • Enabling service — To prevent pause frames to the link partner, ensure that no traffic is being sent to the port before the full circuit has been established including all cross-connections made and the tributaries enabled. If this is not possible, use the ed-eport TL1 command admin parameter or the Configuration → Equipment command from the System View menu to provision Port Administration Control to DISABLE on the LAN port before establishing the cross-connections and enabling tributaries. After all cross-connections are made and the tributaries enabled, enable Port Administration Control.

  • Disabling service — To prevent pause frames to the link partner, remove all traffic from the port first before disabling tributaries and/or deleting cross-connections. If this is not possible, use the ed-eport TL1 command admin parameter or the Configuration → Equipment command from the System View menu to provision Port Administration Control to DISABLE on the LAN port before disabling tributaries or removing cross-connections.

- Restrictions

A Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer equipped with LNW26B/28 OC-48 OLIUs (or functionally equivalent LNW77, LNW121–LNW159, LNW121B–LNW159B OC48 OLIUs) have a capacity limit of 24 STS-1s for Ethernet circuit packs installed in Function slots A, B, or C. Ethernet service assignments are restricted to VCG v1 and v2 on the LNW67/68 2GbE circuit packs when they are installed in Function slots A, B, or C. In slot D or Growth slot, VCGs v1, v2, v3, and v4 may be used.

You must login as either a Privileged or General user to complete this procedure.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin and Required equipment in this chapter.

  2. Obtain the work instructions for the Ethernet service being established.

  3. Be familiar with Ethernet service provisioning or have complete work instructions detailing the particular service being established.

Steps

Perform the following steps to provision Ethernet services.

Click on the Alarm List button on the System View window and verify no alarms are present.

If any alarms are activated, they must be cleared prior to beginning this procedure.

One at a time, use the WaveStar® CIT to log in to each Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX terminating end node. From the System View menu at each node, select View → Equipment.

Result:

The View Equipment window opens.

Verify that the Ethernet circuit packs have been installed into the required slot of the Function Unit group (A, B, C, D or G) at each Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX NE providing Ethernet service.

Note the following general order of provisioning requirements for the type of service being provisioned:

  1. Use the Configuration → Equipment command from the System View menu or the ed-eqpt TL1 command to provision the following for each type of Ethernet circuit pack being provisioned:
    • Set VLAN Tagging Mode (NOTAG, 802.1TAG, TRANS, SWITCHED).

      Does not apply to the LNW71, LNW74, LNW63, LNW64 or LNW87 circuit packs since they are NOTAG (Private Line) only.

      802.1TAG or TRANS mode applies only to the LNW66/67/68 circuit packs.

      SWITCHED mode applies only to the LNW70/LNW170 and LNW78 circuit packs. SWITCHED mode allows for provisioning of 802.1TAG or TRANS on a virtual switch basis.

    • Set Ethernet Cross Connect Mode (STS1, STS3c, STS12c).

      Ethernet Cross Connect Mode applies only to the LNW70/LNW170, LNW71 and LNW78 circuit packs.

      STS1 mode: This is the initial value. Only virtual concatenation of STS-1 cross-connections can be used for the LNW71. For the LNW70/LNW170 and LNW78, STS-1 and virtual concatenation of STS-1s can be used.

      STS3c mode: STS-1 and STS-3c cross connections can be used, but at most one cross connection can be made to each VCG. Applies only to the LNW71 circuit pack.

      STS12c mode: only STS-3c and STS-12c cross connections can be used as well as virtual concatenations of STS-3c. Applies only to the LNW70/LNW170 and LNW78 circuit packs.

    • Select VT Virtual Concatenation mode for the LNW74 circuit pack only. Specifies the number of STS-1s dedicated to VT virtual concatenation. Value 0 specifies no VT concatenation, value of 12 specifies 12 STS1s are reserved for VT concatenation.

    • Set Ethernet Port Mode/Port Configuration.

      Ethernet Port Mode sets the following circuit pack Ethernet ports to operate with different types of PTMs (pluggable transmission modules).

      GX_FX mode: For the LNW70/LNW170, sets ports 1-4 to operate with optical GbE PTMs. Sets ports 5-8 to operate with optical FE PTMs. For the LNW78, sets ports 1-2 to operate with optical GbE PTMs. Sets ports 5-8 to operate with optical FE PTMs.

      GT_FX mode: For the LNW70/LNW170, sets ports 1-4 to operate with electrical GbE PTMs. Sets ports 5-8 to operate with optical FE PTMs. For the LNW78, sets ports 1-2 to operate with electrical GbE PTMs. Sets ports 5-8 to operate with optical FE PTMs.

      FT_FX mode: For the LNW70/LNW170, sets ports 1-4 to operate with electrical FE PTMs. Sets ports 5-8 to operate with optical FE PTMs. For the LNW74, enables electrical FE backplane ports 1-16 and sets ports 17-24 to operate with optical FE PTMs. Provisionable for the LNW74 only when the main slots are equipped with VLF OLIU circuit packs.

      FX mode: For the LNW74, disables electrical FE backplane ports 1-16 and sets ports 17-24 to operate with optical FE PTMs. Provisionable for the LNW74 only when the main slots are equipped with VLF OLIU circuit packs.

      GX_FT mode: For the LNW70/LNW170, sets ports 1-4 to operate with optical GbEs PTMs. Sets ports 5-8 to operate with electrical FE PTMs. For the LNW78, sets ports 1-2 to operate with optical GbEs PTMs. Sets ports 5-8 to operate with electrical FE PTMs.

      GT_FT mode: For the LNW70/LNW170, sets ports 1-4 to operate with electrical GbEs PTMs. Sets ports 5-8 to operate with electrical FE PTMs. For the LNW78, sets ports 1-2 to operate with electrical GbEs PTMs. Sets ports 5-8 to operate with electrical FE PTMs.

      FT mode: For the LNW70/LNW170, sets ports 1-8 to operate with electrical FE PTMs.

      GX mode: For the LNW63 sets ports 1-4 to operate with optical GbEs PTMs. For the LNW64, sets ports 1-8 to operate with optical GbE PTMs.

      GT mode: For the LNW63, sets ports 1-4 to operate with electrical GbE PTMs. For the LNW64, sets ports 1-8 to operate with electrical GbE PTMs.

      GT_GX mode: For the LNW64, sets ports 1-4 to operate with electrical GbE PTMs. Sets ports 5-8 to operate with optical GbE PTMs.

    • Set Line Rate.

      Line Rate sets the following individual circuit pack Ethernet ports to operate with different types of PTMs (pluggable transmission modules).

      GX mode: For the LNW87, sets the port to operate with optical GbE PTMs.

      GT mode: For the LNW87, sets the port to operate with electrical GbE PTMs.

      FT mode: For the LNW87, sets the port to operate with electrical FE PTMs.

      FX mode: For the LNW87, sets the port to operate with optical FE PTMs.

    Burst and Credit Interval values may also be specified at this time for the LNW66/67/68 circuit packs. If required, also assign Alarm Severity Assignment Profiles.

  2. Create Virtual Switches and assign ports (must be done second, if required [does not apply to the NOTAG mode or LNW71, LNW74, LNW63, LNW64 or LNW87 circuit packs]).

    For the LNW70/LNW170 and LNW78, if VLAN Tagging Mode is set to SWITCHED, then select the Virtual LAN Tagging Mode (802.1TAG or Transparent) for each virtual switch created.

  3. Establish SONET cross-connections.

  4. Create Spanning Tree groups and assign ports (does not apply to the NOTAG mode). Does not apply to LNW71, LNW74, LNW63, LNW64 or LNW87 circuit packs.

  5. Establish VLANs and assign ports (802.1Q Tag Mode ONLY). Does not apply to LNW71, LNW74, LNW63, LNW64 or LNW87 circuit packs.

  6. Assign port tags (Transparent Tag mode ONLY). Does not apply to LNW71, LNW74, LNW63, LNW64 or LNW87 circuit packs.
