Physical requirements

Overview

The following information about the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend must be taken into consideration during installation.

Cabinet design and equipment reliability

Outside plant cabinets for use with Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend equipment in NAR applications have demonstrated compliance with GR-487. GR-487 describes cabinet level requirements to ensure a suitable environment for telecommunications equipment. Typical requirements covered in this specification include Water and Dust Intrusion, Wind-Driven Rain, Thermal Shock, Impact Resistance and Shock and Vibration.

The table below shows the dimensions of the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend and Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX equipment. See the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Explore (DMXplore) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-331 for Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXplore product details.

Mounting bracket positions

The figure below illustrates typical mounting bracket placements on the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend shelf.

Figure 6-4: Mounting bracket positions on Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend shelf

Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX and Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXplore rack mount shelves offer the same mounting bracket as Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend. The mounting brackets can be placed differently depending on customer requirements (6, 5, or 8 inches back from the front of the shelf).

Equipment compartment

All doors, covers and faceplates that are part of the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend systems design must be in place when installed in the cabinet to minimize losses in cooling and maximize resistance to electromagnetic interference. Apparatus Blanks (see Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Engineering and Ordering Information, ED8C951-10) are ordered separately from the shelf and must be used where no circuit packs are installed.

Splicing compartment

Cable access ports must be provided in the base of the splicing compartment to permit the entrance of metallic and fiber cables into the equipment. Ports must be sized to allow cables to be placed in accordance with minimum bend radii guidelines, as specified by the cable supplier.

Battery compartment

If a battery compartment is provided, it must be segregated from the electronics compartment. A seal must be provided to prevent gases from seeping into the electronics and splicing compartments. The compartment must be vented to the outside.

Air flow capacity

The fan unit must supply sufficient air volume to cool the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend equipment whether using Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend internal fans or cabinet-level cooling equipment. When installing the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend in OSP environments, the internal fan units may be removed if the air flow requirements are satisfactorily met. The amount of air required is based upon the environmental conditions and the self-heating rates of the electronic equipment. An air mover must be functional whenever circuit packs are in operation including during equipment AC power outages.

For thermal performance requirements, see Thermal operating temperature for OSP cabinets.

Air flow inlet/exhaust

Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend shelves require that air enters at the right of the shelf and exhausts on the left. The placement of these shelves should minimize blockage of airflow. Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend can also be vertically mounted with the reverse flow fan unit at the bottom of the shelf, allowing vertical airflow. When the reverse flow fan is used with a vertical mounting arrangement, the fan unit is in the top of the shelf. This arrangement allows fiber routing downward and air flow upward.

The fan filter must be removed for all Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend shelves in all cabinets. If the cabinet fan can guarantee at least 200 LFM (linear feet per minute) through the shelf, then the internal fan is not needed. It is recommended that the fan be removed in these instances, and used as a spare for throughout your network.

Cabling

Alcatel-Lucent offers a full complement of transmission cables and optical jumpers. Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend provides rear access for cables.

For more information regarding cable ordering, see Chapter 7, Ordering. For more information on required cables and cable arrangements, see Cabling in Chapter 4, Product description.

Cable placement and routing

For cable placement and routing information, see Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Installation Manual, 365-372-327. Ensure that cables are routed in accordance with the guidelines provided in the Installation Manuals. Circuit pack cables are routed with half of the total number of cables on each side of the shelf.

Cable rating

Cable must be rated for a minimum temperature of 80ºC.

Connector contacts

All connector contacts that mate to Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend equipment should be of similar contact finishes. Alcatel-Lucent recommends the use of gold with a minimum of 30 micro-inches.
