Procedure 14-14: Retrieve software generic release and database information

- Overview

Use this procedure to retrieve information about the active, previous, and dormant software generics and the active, previous, and backup databases present on the NVMs installed in the LNW2 SYSCTL.

- Privilege level

Any user (Privileged, General, Maintenance, or Reports Only) can complete this procedure.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin and Required equipment in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

Steps

Complete the following steps to retrieve information about the active, previous, and dormant software generics and the active, previous, and backup databases present on the NVMs installed in the LNW2 SYSCTL.

1

Are you physically in front of the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend for which you want to determine ONLY the generic software version (no database information)?

If...

Then...

Yes,

Continue with Step 2.

No,

Proceed to Step 5.

2

Depress and hold the ACO TEST push-button on the LNW2 SYSCTL for about 4 seconds.

Result:

All LEDs on the shelf light. A red, 35-segment (5 x 7) rectangle appears in the IND display on the SYSCTL. Since the IND display is a 35-segment display, this test indicates all segments are working.

3

Release the ACO TEST push-button on the LNW2 SYSCTL when the red rectangle disappears in the IND display.

Result:

The current software generic appears in the IND display on the LNW2 SYSCTL and the shelf LEDs return to their previous status.

4

STOP! End of Procedure.

5

Connect the PC and establish a WaveStar® CIT session.

Reference:

Procedure 14-2: Connect Personal Computer (PC) and establish WaveStar® CIT session

6

The active generic is displayed in title bar in the WaveStar® CIT System View window.

7

From the System View, select View → Software Generic.

Result:

The View Software Generic screen appears. This screen displays information about the Software Generic(s) and Database(s).

Software generic

Displays the software generics available on the NVMs:

  • Active: The software generic running from the NVMs is composed of boot code, compressed SYSCTL code, uncompressed SYSCTL code, and compressed SMART CP code.

  • Previous: When a new generic is applied, the Active generic is renamed Previous and retains the same structure. If there is no Previous generic, “?” is displayed.

  • Dormant:
    • A software generic was downloaded to the NE but not yet applied.

    • A release for a compatible Product Type was downloaded to the NE. An Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend 3.x generic or earlier is treated as a different product type because it cannot be applied on the LNW2.

When a valid Dormant generic is applied, the Active becomes the Previous and the Dormant becomes the Active. Since after the Dormant is applied, there is no longer a Dormant generic, “?” is displayed.

Product Type

Displays the associated product type for each generic.

  • For the Active and Previous generics the only valid Product type is DMXTEND.

  • For the Dormant software generic, the Product Type can be any of the following product types
    • dmx = Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX

    • dmxtend = Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend

    • dmxpress = Metropolis® DMXpress

    • dmxplore = Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5

    • ddmoc3 = DDM OC-3

    • ddmoc12 = DDM-2000 OC-12

    • fbrrch = FIBER REACH

Databases

Displays available databases on the NVMs:

  • Active - When a new generic is installed, the Active database is saved and renamed Previous, the Active database is updated, and the security and history files are changed to record the APPLY command and any resulting messages.

The Active database release must match the Active generic release.

  • Previous - When a new generic is installed, the Active database is renamed Previous. If there is no Previous database, “?” is displayed.

  • Backup - A backup database was downloaded to the NE but not selected to be the Active database.

When a valid Backup database is selected, the Active becomes the Previous and the Backup becomes the Active. Since after the Backup is selected, there is no longer a Backup database, “?” is displayed.
