Procedure 7-15: Provision TCP/IP and Proxy ARP on an IAO LAN port

- Overview

Use this procedure to perform the following:

  • Enable/Disable TCP/IP on an IAO LAN port

  • Enable/Disable Proxy Address Resolution Protocol (Proxy ARP) on an IAO LAN port

  • Provision the IP address and IP Subnet Mask of an IAO LAN port

  • Provision IP Default Router Address if connecting to a default router (LAN-2 only).

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin and Required equipment in this chapter.

  2. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure.

  3. Verify that the work instructions specify the LAN port(s) to be provisioned.

  4. Verify that the work instructions specify the IP Address and IP Subnet Mask of the desired LAN port and the IP Default Router Address if it is connecting to a default router (LAN-2 only).

Steps

Perform the following steps to complete this procedure.

1

Determine which IAO LAN port(s) you want to use (front or rear).

Important!

If you are using the rear IAO LAN port, use lan-2 as your AID. If you are using the front IAO LAN port, use lan-1 as your AID.

2

From the System View menu, select Administration → Data Communications.

Result:

The Data Communications window opens.

3

Click on the TCP/IP tab at the top of the window.

Result:

The TCP/IP parameters display.

4

Select and/or modify the following parameters:

  1. Select the Port Aid: (LAN-1 [front] or LAN-2 [rear]) being provisioned.

  2. One at a time, click the Modify button to set the IP Address and IP Subnet Mask of the desired LAN port and the IP Default Router Address, if it is connecting to a default router (lan-2 only).

When the provisioning window opens for the IP address being provisioned, enter the IP address as four dot-separated decimal numbers ranging from 0 to 255. Click OK to make your changes or Cancel to quit.

  3. Select Enable to enable the TCP/IP Function, or Disable to disable the TCP/IP Function. Disabling the TCP/IP function on an IAO LAN port also causes enabled Proxy ARP to be disabled for the IAO LAN port.

OSI Function and TCP/IP Function cannot both be enabled on LAN-2.

  4. Select Enable to enable the Proxy ARP, or Disable to disable the Proxy ARP. To enable Proxy ARP on an IAO LAN port, the TCP/IP Function must also be enabled.

For applications that require IP connectivity between IP-based operations systems and remote network elements (for example, SNMP and Network Time Protocol), enabling Proxy ARP on the Gateway Network Element (GNE) eliminates the need for static routes on the external router or OS host that is connected to the GNE via the IAO LAN interface.

Important!

If you enter duplicate IP addresses and/or IP subnet addresses, a warning appears: Input, Data Not Valid, each IAO LAN port must have a unique IP subnet address. Scroll through the Port AID drop-down menu and identify the duplication, then assign correct addresses as necessary.

If you select Enable and click Apply to apply any changes, then execute the command when requested, the system will reset and you will be logged off the system. Selecting Disable allows you to stay logged on to the system to perform more provisioning. You can then come back to this window and enable the TCP/IP function.

Reference:

For an OS to establish a TCP/IP connection to or through a TL1 TCP/IP Gateway Network Element (GNE), the IP address must be entered at the TL1 TCP/IP GNE to authorize access. Refer to Procedure 7-16: Provision/enable/disable the NE as a TL1 TCP/IP GNE.

5

Click Apply at the bottom of the window to make your changes.

Result:

A warning window opens and asks if you want to execute this command.

6

Click Yes to execute the command.

Result:

If you made changes that enabled the TCP/IP function, the changes are applied, the system resets, and you are logged off the system. If you made changes and disabled the TCP/IP function, the changes are applied and you are still logged off the system.

A flashing b in the IND display on the SYSCTL indicates that a boot is in progress. During the boot, the b may extinguish for up to 20 seconds and then resume flashing.

7

If you wish to enable the second port, return to Step 2.

8

Click Close when you want to exit window, if you are still logged into the system.
