Procedure 7-20: Provision SNMP management features

- Overview

Use this procedure to provision the following network element SNMP management functions:

  • Provision SNMP contact and location information

  • Enable or disable SNMP authentication failure traps.

To provision SNMP management functions for the VLNC40/42, VLNC60/61, and VLNC64 circuit packs, refer to Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Command Line Interface Guide.

To provision SNMP access to the network element (VLNC2 SYSCTL, VLNC35 Fast Ethernet, and VLNC50/52/55 SONET/SDH Transport circuit packs) from an SNMP manager, refer to Procedure 7-21: Edit, delete, or enter SNMP users.

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin and Required equipment in this chapter.

  2. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure.

Steps

Perform the following steps to provision the network element SNMP management features.

1

From the System View menu, select Administration → Data Communications.

Result:

The Data Communications window opens.

2

Click on the SNMP Management tab to view parameters.

3

Enter the following parameters according to the work instructions and click Apply:

  • NE Contact

Contact Name:: an alphanumeric string of up to 255 characters consisting of the name of the contact person for this NE and how to contact the person.

  • NE Location

Location Name: an alphanumeric string of up to 255 characters describing the physical location of this NE.

  • SNMP Authentication Failure Trap

SNMP Trap Control: Select Enable or Disable.

Traps are the SNMP equivalent of SONET alarm and event autonomous messages.

Enabling this feature results in the network element sending an Authentication Failure trap to all registered SNMP users if an SNMP request is received from an unauthorized user. An unauthorized user is a user whose IP address/community ID pair do not match an entry in the NE's SNMP User list. To add a user to the SNMP User list, refer to Procedure 7-21: Edit, delete, or enter SNMP users.

Disabling this feature prevents traps from being sent if there is an authentication failure.

Result:

A dialog box may appear asking you to confirm executing this command.

4

Click Yes.

Result:

A warning message appears stating that a reset is required before any SNMP provisioning changes take effect and that a reset causes all active login sessions to be logged out.

Continue with Step 5.

Do you wish to perform SNMP User provisioning?

If...

Then...

Yes

Click No on the warning window. Then click Close and refer to Procedure 7-21: Edit, delete, or enter SNMP users.
