Procedure 6-8: Optimize backplane bandwidth

- Overview

Use this procedure to manually optimize backplane bandwidth between the VLNC35 Fast Ethernet and VLNC50/52/55 SONET/SDH Transport circuit packs.

To determine if manually optimizing backplane bandwidth is required, refer to Procedure 6-7: Evaluate bandwidth utilization.

-  Defragmentation behaviors

The following behaviors apply when you perform the defragmentation operation:

  • Rearrangements do not interrupt traffic on cross-connections that are not being rearranged.

  • No misconnections are caused by rearrangement.

  • During cross-connection provisioning, the NE dynamically assigns the I/O tributaries to the backplane tributaries.

  • The optimize backplane bandwidth operation removes the fragmentation at the STS1/VC3 and STS3c/VC4 levels and minimizes the number of STS1s/VC3s required to transport cross-connected VT1.5s/VC12s. Interruptions will vary in duration on VT1.5/VC12, STS1/VC3, and STS3c/VC4 cross-connections each time they are rearranged.

Excessive fragmentation

Excessive fragmentation can be determined in the following ways:

  • If you provision a new cross-connection and the backplane bandwidth necessary to support the cross-connection is not available, the command will be denied with a SARB (Status All Resources Busy) error response.

  • You can check the backplane bandwidth utilization for the VLNC35 circuit pack using the WaveStar® CIT to display the information or the RTRV-STATE-EQPT command to view the raw utilization data.

Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged or General user to complete this procedure.

Steps
DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

Traffic interruptions may occur on rearranged cross-connections.

Review the applicable Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Release 7.2.X Customer Release Notes for any detailed information or cautions that may apply to this procedure.

Complete the following steps to optimize backplane bandwidth.

1

From the System View menu, select Configuration → Optimize Backplane Bandwidth.

Result:

The Equipment Selection window opens.

2

From the Equipment Selection window, highlight the VLNC35 circuit pack (CP fn-c-1) and click Select.

Result:

A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes to initiate optimization.
