Procedure 4-11: Replace VLNC4x/VLNC6x pluggable transmission modules with different speed pluggable transmission modules

- Overview

Use this procedure to replace the out-of-service VLNC4x/VLNC6x pluggable transmission modules with different speed pluggable transmission modules.

Important!

The VLNC4x/VLNC6x circuit packs only support operating all the Ethernet ports at the same speed. Therefore, all the Ethernet ports on a circuit pack must be equipped with the same speed pluggable transmission modules.

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged or General user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

The following equipment is required to perform this procedure:

  • Wrist Strap

  • Replacement pluggable transmission modules

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin and Required equipment in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  3. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure.

  4. Review the applicable Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Release 7.2.X Customer Release Notes for any detailed procedures or cautions that may apply to this procedure.

Steps

Complete the following steps to replace the out-of-service VLNC4x/VLNC6x pluggable transmission modules with different speed pluggable transmission modules.

1

Log in to the circuit pack with the pluggable transmission modules to be replaced.

Reference:

Procedure 14-20: Connect personal computer (PC) and establish Command Line Interface (CLI) session to VLNC4x/VLNC6x

2

If required, remove the cables from the required pluggable transmission modules.

3

Determine the type of latching mechanism on the required pluggable transmission module and remove the pluggable transmission modules from the circuit pack.

4

Remove the required pluggable transmission modules from the system inventory using the sfp-unequip command.

Example:

(Interface d1-1)# sfp-unequip.

5

Install the required different speed pluggable transmission modules.

VLNC4x circuit pack,

Proceed to Step 8

Important!

When a pluggable transmission module is installed in the VLNC6x circuit pack, the speed (rate) of the pluggable transmission module is not automatically detected. The port speed must be provisioned using the speed all command. (The VLNC4x circuit pack automatically detects the speed (rate) of the pluggable transmission modules.)

Provision the required speed of both Ethernet interfaces to either 100 (100 Mbps) or 1000 (1 Gbps) using the speed all command.

Example:

(Config)# speed all 1000.

If required, provision the socket/port parameters.
