Procedure 8-2: Configure ptp-1588 timing for circuit pack/port

- Overview

Use this procedure to provision ptp-1588 timing for a VLNC6x circuit pack or a d2-(1-4) port on a VLNC42/42B circuit pack. The VLNC42/42B circuit pack only supports ptp-1588 timing (slave mode only) on at most two d2 interfaces or a LAG interface consisting of two d2 interfaces.

The IEEE 1588 protocol distributes time and frequency via Ethernet with expected endpoint time-alignment time precision measured in nanoseconds. The protocol is designed to synchronize real-time clocks on the nodes of a distributed system that communicate using a network.

The protocol uses a master/slave relationship to distribute timestamps from one device to the others. The protocol traffic is an Ethernet frame with a special Ethertype field to indicate 1588.

Step

1

Log in to the VLNC42/42B/6x circuit pack being provisioned.

Proceed to Step 5.

3

From the Navigation menu, select Timing → System Timing → Summary and verify that the system timing parameters are provisioned correctly.

Result:

The System Timing Summary screen appears.

4

If required, select Timing → System Timing → Configuration. Enter the required System Timing Source and Differential Timestamp Frequency parameters, then click Submit.

Result:

The System Timing Configuration screen appears.

5

From the Navigation menu, select Timing → ptp-1588 Timing → ptp-1588 Protocol Configuration.

Result:

The ptp-1588 Protocol Configuration screen appears.

6

Enter the required parameters, then click Submit.

Parameters include:

  • State: Enables or disables the IEEE 1588 Precision Timing Protocol on the system.

  • Slot/Port (VLNC42x circuit pack only): Specifies the d2 interface port or d2 LAG AID.

  • Mode: Enables/disables the master or slave mode.

The master mode must be enabled on the system that has access to a high-precision clock. The 1588 component derives timing from the provisioned system clock.

The slave mode should be used on a remote system that does not have access to high precision clock source.

The VLNC42/42B circuit packs support the master and slave modes for OAM 1–way delay measurement timing.

  • VLAN ID: Specifies the VLAN id over which the 1588 protocols are transmitted.

  • Primary Port (VLNC6x circuit pack only): Specifies the primary port over which the 1588 protocols are transmitted and received.

  • Backup Port (VLNC6x circuit pack only): Specifies the backup port over which the 1588 protocols are transmitted and received.

  • Priority1 (VLNC6x and VLNC42B circuit pack only): Specifies the priority1 of the 1588 protocol. It is used only in the Master mode while sending the 1588 protocol message. (Not supported on VLNC42 circuit packs.)

  • Priority2 (VLNC6x and VLNC42B circuit pack only): Specifies the priority2 of the 1588 protocol. It is used only in the Master mode while sending the 1588 protocol message. (Not supported on VLNC42 circuit packs.)

  • Domain: Specifies the PTP domain value of the 1588 protocol.

  • Log Mean Sync Interval (VLNC6x and VLNC42B circuit pack only): Specifies the Log Mean Sync Interval of the 1588 protocol. (Not supported on VLNC42 circuit packs.)

  • Log Min Mean Delay Interval: Specifies the Log Minimum Mean Delay Interval of the 1588 protocol.

  • Log Mean Announce Interval (VLNC6x and VLNC42B circuit pack only): Specifies the Log Mean Announce Interval of the 1588 protocol. (Not supported on VLNC42 circuit packs.)

  • Announce Receipt Timeout: Specifies the Announce Receipt Timeout Interval of the 1588 protocol.

  • Time Switch Mode (VLNC6x circuit pack only): Specifies the switch over of master clock selection is controlled by 1588 protocol’s master clock selection algorithm or by the system.

  • Multicast MAC Address: Specifies the Multicast MAC address on which to send/receive the 1588 protocol messages.

7

From the Navigation menu, select Timing → ptp-1588 Timing → ptp-1588 Protocol Summary and verify that the required parameters were provisioned correctly.

Result:

The ptp-1588 Protocol Summary screen appears.
