Configuration overview

Note:
  • This document uses the term ‟preprovisioning” in the context of preparing or preconfiguring entities such as chassis slots, cards, MDAs, ports, and interfaces, before initialization. These entities can be installed while remaining administratively disabled (shutdown). When the entity is in a no shutdown state (administratively enabled), then the entity is considered to be provisioned.

  • Unless specified otherwise, the term ‟card” is used generically to refer to IOMs .

Nokia routers provide the capability to configure chassis slots to accept specific card and MDA types and set the relevant configurations before the equipment is actually installed. The preprovisioning capability allows you to plan your configurations as well as monitor and manage your router hardware inventory. Ports and interfaces can also be preprovisioned. When the functionality is needed, the cards can be inserted into the appropriate chassis slots when required.

Chassis slots and card slots

This section provides information about the chassis slots and cards for 7705 SAR Gen 2 routers.

Use the following command to display the cards provisioned and equipped in the chassis.
show card

7705 SAR-10x

The 7705 SAR-10x is a chassis-based platform with eight MDA slots and two CPIOM slots; CPIOM cards provide both CPM and IOM functionality. The 7705 SAR-10x chassis supports single-width 7705 SAR-10x MDAs in MDA slots 1 through 6, and double-width MDAs in slots 7 and 8.

The 7705 SAR-10x chassis supports the following removable MDAs.

  • 7705 SAR-10x Ethernet MDAs
  • 8-port RS-232 and C37.94 Combination MDA
  • 8-port T1/E1 MDA
  • 8-port C37.94 Teleprotection card

See the SR OS R26.x.Rx Software Release Notes, part number 3HE 29176 000x TQZZA for a list of supported MDA types. See the 7705 SAR-Hx, SAR-Mx, and SAR-10x MDA Installation Guide for more information about the installation of 7705 SAR-10x MDAs.

MDA slots must be provisioned on the 7705 SAR-10x. The MDA type must be specified to preprovision a chassis slot. System administrators or network operators can enter MDA type information for each slot. A preprovisioned slot can remain empty without conflicting with populated slots.

Note: The following restrictions apply when provisioning MDAs on the 7705 SAR-10x:
  • The following MDAs are supported only in slots 2, 4, and 5 to 8:
    • m8-1g-sfp
    • m8-1g-rj45
    • m4-rs232-rj45+4-c3794-sfp
    • m8-t1e1-rj48
    • m8-c3794-sfp
  • The m2-1g-sfp+2-10g-sfp+ MDA is supported only in slots 1 and 3.
  • When the 7705 SAR-10x is in the 10g/25g+1g port speed mode, TDM cards are supported only in slots 2 and 4.

CPIOMs can only be installed in slots A and B of the chassis and do not require provisioning. Both IOM components (card 1 and card 2) are always automatically provisioned, regardless of the number of installed CPIOMs. All MDAs must be configured under card 1; configuration of MDAs under card 2 is blocked.

The 7705 SAR-10x is preprovisioned from the factory with the following permanent configuration:

  • CPIOM card type in slot A and B is cpm-sar-x

  • IOM card type in slot 1 and 2 is iom-sar-x

7705 SAR-Hx and 7705 SAR-Mx

On the 7705 SAR-Hx and 7705 SAR-Mx, the system hardware is permanently built into the chassis and has preassigned parameters, with the exception of MDA slot 1, which supports removable MDAs.

The IOM of the 7705 SAR-Hx and 7705 SAR-Mx is a virtual entity, defined in software. The I/O ports are grouped and virtualized into slots (MDAs) for convenience of assignment. As a result of this design, the CLI identifiers for the IOM and MDAs are preset.

The 7705 SAR-Hx and 7705 SAR-Mx replace the CPM with an integrated control and switching functional block that does not need to be provisioned. It is displayed in the CLI as CPM A.

The 7705 SAR-Hx and 7705 SAR-Mx chassis support the following removable MDAs in slot 1:

  • 7705 SAR-Hx and 7705 SAR-Mx Ethernet MDAs
  • 8-port RS-232 and C37.94 Combination MDA
  • 8-port T1/E1 MDA

See the SR OS R26.x.Rx Software Release Notes, part number 3HE 29176 000x TQZZA for a list of supported MDA types. See the 7705 SAR-Hx, SAR-Mx, and SAR-10x MDA Installation Guide for more information about the installation of 7705 SAR-Hx and 7705 SAR-Mx MDAs .

MDA slot 1 must be provisioned on the 7705 SAR-Hx and 7705 SAR-Mx. The MDA type must be specified to provision a chassis slot. A preprovisioned slot can remain empty without conflicting with populated slots.

MDA slots 3 and 4 are reserved for virtual ISA MDAs.

The 7705 SAR-Hx and 7705 SAR-Mx are preprovisioned from the factory with the following permanent configuration:

  • CPM card type in slot A is cpm-sar-1x

  • IOM card type in slot 1 is iom-sar-1x

  • MDA type in slot 1/2 is m4-1g-rj+6-10g-sfp++2-25g-sfp28

7705 SAR-1

The 7705 SAR-1 is a fixed chassis; that is, the system hardware is permanently built into the chassis and has preassigned parameters. The IOM of the 7705 SAR-1 is a virtual entity, defined in software. The I/O ports are grouped and virtualized into slots (MDAs) for convenience of assignment. As a result of this design, the CLI identifiers for the IOM and MDAs are preset. The fixed configuration of the 7705 SAR-1 restricts the router to port-level provisioning; however, the IOM and MDA numbering must still be specified in CLI commands.

The 7705 SAR-1 replaces the CPM with an integrated control and switching functional block that does not need to be provisioned. It is displayed in the CLI as CPM A.

The 7705 SAR-1 is provisioned at the factory with the following permanent configuration:

  • CPM card type in slot A is cpm-sar

  • IOM card type in slot 1 is iom-sar

  • MDA types:

    • Slot 1/1 is m10-sfp++6-sfp
    • Slot 1/2 is isa-tunnel-v
    • Slot 1/3 is isa-bb-v

MDAs

MDAs are pluggable adapter cards that provide physical interface connectivity and are available in a range of interface and density configurations. MDA modules differ by chassis. See the applicable chassis installation guides and the corresponding MDA installation guides for more information about specific MDAs.

The 7705 SAR-10x supports removable MDAs in slots 1 through 8. Most 7705 SAR-10x MDAs can be provisioned in any MDA slot. To provision an MDA on the 7705 SAR-10x, the card slot value must be 1; the card type value cannot be configured.

The 7705 SAR-Hx and 7705 SAR-Mx support removable MDAs only in slot 1. For MDAs in slot 2 to 4, the software internally treats the MDA as a logical entity to represent the ports on the chassis. The MDA type is autoprovisioned on startup.

The 7705 SAR-1 does not support removable MDAs. The software internally treats the MDA as a logical entity to represent the ports on the chassis. The MDA type is autoprovisioned on startup.

In all cases, the card slot and IOM card type must be provisioned before an MDA can be provisioned. A preprovisioned MDA slot can remain empty without interfering with services on populated equipment. When an MDA is installed and enabled, the system verifies that the MDA type matches the provisioned type. If the command options do not match, the MDA remains offline.
