5

Important!

The Ring Upgrade Mode is required for cross-connections and provisioning data to be mapped to the replacement circuit pack.

At the WaveStar® CIT System View, select Configuration → Ring Upgrade Mode.

Result:

A dialog box appears asking you to confirm changing the NE Mode to Ring Upgrade Mode. Click Yes.

The ABN LED is lighted on the SYSCTL circuit pack faceplate and the WaveStar® CIT Alarm List shows the Ring Upgrade Mode as Not Alarmed.

For more information about the Ring Upgrade Mode, refer to Ring Upgrade Mode.

6

Important!

If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch.

Open the lower faceplate latch on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Then replace the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 with the replacement OC-192 OLIU circuit pack.

Result:

A transmission hit may occur after the OC-192 OLIU circuit pack is inserted. The transmission hit is a result of an internal system timing adjustment to accommodate different line rates in the two Main slots.

The replacement OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 is tested and autoprovisioned.

The system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition and an inc. OC48 LOS alarm for Main slot M1.

If the provisioned system timing mode is External, the system may also report an inc. DS1 sync. ref. OOL alarm.

7

At both ends of the optical span to be upgraded, perform the following to connect the replacement OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 and the required OC-192 circuit pack/port at the opposite end of the upgraded OC-192 optical span:

  1. Clean and connect the transmit optical fibers.

  2. Measure the optical receive power of the receive fibers using an optical power meter. Select the appropriate LBO to attenuate the receive signal to the middle of the allowable optical receive power range. (Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-300 for the SONET optical specifications of the OC-192 circuit packs.)

  3. Clean and connect the receive fibers.

Result:

The inc. OC48 LOS alarm clears. Transmission is now supported on the upgraded optical span.

8

Important!

The UPD/INIT button does not work during this upgrade.

At the System View select Configuration → Update System → Upgrade. Select main-1 (default) as the Directed Slot Choice and click OK.

Result:

A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes.

The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M1 clears, and the system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2.

9

If required, verify the active/standby status of the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

DANGER

NOTICE

Equipment damage hazard

If an OC-192 OLIU circuit pack is connected to an OC-48 OLIU circuit pack equipment damage may occur.

Do not reconnect the optical fibers until instructed to do so. The optical fibers are reconnected after the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack is upgraded at each end of the optical span.

Important!

If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch.

Open the lower faceplate latch on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Then replace the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 with the replacement OC-192 OLIU circuit pack.

Result:

A transmission hit will occur after the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack is removed. The transmission hit is the result of an internal system timing adjustment to accommodate different line rates in the two Main slots.

The replacement OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 is tested and autoprovisioned.

The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2 clears, and the system reports an inc. OC192 LOS alarm for Main slot M2. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes in the ring.

End of steps

Signal Type: STNA

Select STNA to change the rate of an optical line on a multirate pack to unprovisioned.

STNA is the initial value for all ports when the circuit pack is accepted into a function/growth group with no expected circuit pack type. If the companion circuit pack is an accepted circuit pack with the same circuit pack type, the value is set to the Signal Type of the companion for protected appications. For 0x1 applications, the value is set to STNA

When provisioned STNA, synchronization messaging (syncmsg) is DISABLED, DCC is DISABLED (and is not retrievable), and there is no line primary state (pst). No DBCHG messages are issued for those parameters which changed. No line parameters other than may be provisioned or retrieved. When the Signal Type parameter is changed from STNA to any other value, the port application is set to 0x1. All other port parameters are set to their default values.

STNA value is not allowed if

Note:

If Signal Type is OC-48 on ports 1, 3, 5, or 7, then the STNA ports 2, 4, 6, or 8 are NOT provisionable as OC-48 uses up bandwidth for both the odd and the next higher even port as well. For example, if port 3 is configured for OC-48, port 4 is STNA and is not configurable.
