Important!
This in-service upgrade is intended to be used with only circuit packs carrying service protected traffic.
Important!
The Very Large Fabric LNW59 and LNW82 circuit packs are only compatible with the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX High Capacity Shelf (DMX-HC-20A, DMX-HC-30A, or DMX-HC-30A-CE Shelf Type). The Standard Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX Shelf does not support upgrades to Very Large Fabric circuit packs.
To determine the shelf type, select View → Equipment, highlight Shelf, and click Select to obtain the shelf details.
When upgrading to a circuit pack with more ports, the cross-connections on the original port are mapped to the same port number on the upgrade circuit pack. The upgrade circuit pack must also be configured with compatible pluggable transmission modules that match the port signal rates on the original circuit pack.
The additional ports on the upgrade circuit pack cannot be used until after the upgrade is completed.
In multi-shelf DCS systems utilizing a single TID, the OLIU circuit packs in the Main slots of the Main shelf support the cross connect capacity upgrades.
If a shelf is configured as a subshelf of a multi-shelf DCS system utilizing a single TID, any attempt to upgrade the OLIU circuit packs in the Main slots of the subshelf will be denied.
You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

NOTICE Service-disruption hazard |
If upgrading to Very Large Fabric (VLF) multiport, multirate LNW82 OC3/OC12/OC48 OLIU or Very Large Fabric (VLF) LNW59 OC-192 OLIU circuit packs, transmission hits (up to 130 ms) will occur as BLSR traffic is switched and transmission hits (up to 3 seconds) will occur as traffic on LNW20 TMUX circuit packs is switched.
If upgrading from a small fabric LNW26B OC-48 OLIU to a large fabric LNW27 OC-48 OLIU, transmission hits (up to 400 ms) will occur as BLSR traffic is switched.
If the OLIU circuit packs being upgraded carry Ethernet traffic with LCAS enabled, transmission hits (up to 6 seconds) may occur as Ethernet traffic is switched.
The length of the service hits varies based on shelf equipage and TDM/Ethernet service provisioning.
Prior to performing this procedure:
Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge information in Chapter 1, Safety.
Obtain the work instructions for this procedure, and verify that the affected OLIU circuit pack/protection group AIDs are specified.
Review the applicable office records and verify that each fiber span is capable of supporting the replacement circuit pack/pluggable transmission module. Refer to Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-300 for the SONET optical specifications of the replacement circuit packs/pluggable transmission modules.
Review the applicable Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) Software Release Description for any detailed procedures or cautions that may apply to this upgrade procedure.
If the provisioned Timing Source is external, verify that both timing references (REF-1 and REF-2) are in-service (IS) before beginning this procedure.
Determine the local operating procedures for removing a circuit pack. Local operating procedures for removing a circuit pack may vary. One method is to disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack. Another method is to verify the circuit pack active/standby status, perform manual switches if the circuit pack is active, and then disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack.
Important!
When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS, section DCC channel failed, and neighbor SYSCTL CP unavailable alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.
When optical fibers are connected in a BLSR during this procedure, Default K-bytes alarms are reported temporarily.
Complete the following steps to upgrade in-service, the cross connect capacity of the high-speed OLIU circuit packs at a node in a 1+1/UPSR/BLSR network.
1 |
Log in to the node where the high-speed OLIU circuit packs are to be replaced. Reference: Procedure 14-2: Connect Personal Computer (PC) and establish WaveStar® CIT session
2 |
Using the WaveStar® CIT verify the status of the node to be upgraded. Reference: Procedure 12-1.1: Verify status of node to be upgraded
3 |
If required, verify the active/standby status of the high-speed OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack. Reference: Procedure 12-1.2: Verify active/standby status of circuit pack to be replaced
4 |
Important! The OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 must be replaced first. Open the lower faceplate latch on the OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Then replace the OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 with the replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module. Result: Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) may occur if traffic exists on the circuit pack in Main slot M1. If through traffic exists (UPSRs and BLSRs only), transmission hits (less than 60 ms) may occur at the nodes where the traffic is added/dropped. If a circuit pack firmware update is required, the system reports the Waiting for Download and Install Program IP conditions when the replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module is installed. After the circuit pack firmware update is complete, the system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M1. If a circuit pack firmware update is not required, the system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M1 when the replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module is installed. If upgrading to VLF OLIU circuit packs, the system reports a CP removed or CP failure alarm for approximately 4 minutes before reporting the unexpected CP type alarm. For BLSR protection groups, the system also reports a Line Automatic Switch condition for Main slot M1. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes in the network. Reference: Procedure 4-2: Install OLIU circuit packs in Main slots
5 |
Measure the optical receive power of the receive fiber using an optical power meter. Select the appropriate LBO to attenuate the receive signal to the middle of the allowable optical receive power range. (Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-300 for the SONET optical specifications of the OLIU circuit packs/pluggable transmission modules.)
6 |
Clean all fiber connectors, and connect the transmit and receive optical fibers to the replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module in Main slot M1. Reference: Procedure 14-3: Clean optical fibers, dual LC adapters and LC lightguide buildouts (LBOs)
7 |
Important! The UPD/INIT button does not work during this upgrade. At the System View select Configuration → Update System → Upgrade. Select main-1 (default) as the Directed Slot Choice and click OK. Result: A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes. The replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module in Main slot M1 is tested and autoprovisioned, The system performs automatic protection switches. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) occur as traffic is automatically switched from the OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 to the replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module in Main slot M1. All traffic is now active on the replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module in Main slot M1. The unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M1 clears, and the system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2. For BLSR protection groups, the Line Automatic Switch condition for Main slot M1 clears, and the system reports a Line Automatic Switch condition for Main slot M2. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes in the network.
8 |
Open the lower faceplate latch on the OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Then replace the OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 with the replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module. Result: The replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module in Main slot M2 is tested and autoprovisioned. If a circuit pack firmware update is required, the system reports the Waiting for Download and Install Program IP conditions when the replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module is installed. After the circuit pack firmware update is complete, the unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2 clears, and the system reports an inc. LOS alarm for Main slot M2. If a circuit pack firmware update is not required, the unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2 clears, and the system reports an inc. LOS alarm for Main slot M2. Important! It is recommended that the network element database be backed up to a remote OS (for example, OMS) after an upgrade. This creates a current backup copy that includes the replacement circuit packs/pluggable transmission modules. The remote OS could use this backup copy to restore the network element database in the event of a catastrophic failure. Attempts to restore the network element database using a backup copy created prior to the upgrade may result in circuit pack failures. Back up the network element database using the Configuration → Software → Remote Backup command. Reference:
