Procedure 14-9: Perform DS1/E1 transmission test

- Overview

Use this procedure to test a DS1 or E1 port at a stand-alone Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX shelf or in a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX network.

If this procedure is being used to perform end-to-end testing in a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX network, it is assumed that the complete Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX network configuration (BLSR, UPSR, 1+1, Bidirectional 1+1, or Optimized 1+1) has already been established/tested and that only a particular DS1 or E1 port is being tested at this time.

In end-to-end testing, one shelf is referred to as the near end and the other shelf as the far end. These designations are arbitrary; either shelf can be the near-end or the far-end shelf.

Important!

The LNW18 and LNW20 TMUX circuit packs do not support the DS1 port transmission tests.

Important!

The Port Maintenance parameter for the affected ports must be provisioned Allow to perform this procedure. If the Port Maintenance parameter for the affected ports is provisioned Inhibit, loopback and test transmission commands for the affected ports are denied.

To view the Port Maintenance parameter, a Privileged, General, Maintenance, or Reports Only user must select Administration → Allow/Inhibit Port Maintenance to access the required port.

To provision the Port Maintenance parameter, a Privileged user must perform Procedure 7-23: Allow/inhibit port/tributary maintenance.

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged or General user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

In addition to the equipment listed in Required equipment, a DS1 or E1 Test Set is also required.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  3. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure and note the assigned AIDs.

  4. Select View → Equipment to access the required DS1/E1 port and verify that the DS1/E1 port parameters have been provisioned correctly (according to the work instructions) at the terminating Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX shelf(s) of the circuit being tested.

If required, select Configuration → Equipment to make DS1/E1 port provisioning changes.

Refer to Procedure 4-9: Provision DS1/E1 circuit packs/ports for service for more information.

Steps

Complete the following steps to perform a DS1/E1 transmission test.

1

Important!

Proper terminating and pass-through cross-connections must exist at each shelf (including stand-alone shelves) to establish continuity for the DS1/E1 circuit being tested.

Select View → Cross-Connections to obtain a cross-connection list and verify that the proper VT1.5/STS-n (DS1) cross-connections exist for the DS1 circuit to be tested. If an E1 circuit is to be tested, verify the proper STS-3 cross-connections exist.

If required, select Configuration → Cross-Connections to access the Cross-Connection Wizard and create the proper VT1.5/STS-n cross-connections for the DS1/E1 circuit to be tested.

If the transmission test is to be performed...

Then...

at a stand-alone shelf in the Terminal direction (toward the fiber),

At the required OLIUs, loop back the fiber.

Refer to Procedure 14-6: Connect OLIU optical loopbacks.

at a stand-alone shelf in the Facility direction (toward the DSX),

At the DSX-1 panel or equivalent connection point, connect a patch cord from the OUT jack to the IN jack associated with the DS1/E1 circuit being tested.

in a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX network (end-to-end),

At the far-end DSX-1 panel or equivalent connection point, connect a patch cord from the OUT jack to the IN jack associated with the DS1/E1 circuit being tested, OR log in to the far-end Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX shelf and select Fault → Analysis → Loopback to perform a Terminal loopback on the DS1/E1 circuit being tested.

If the transmission test is to be performed...

Then...

at a stand-alone shelf in the Terminal direction (toward the fiber),

Either select Fault → Test → Transmission to perform a terminal transmission test on the DS1/E1 port, or connect a test set to the port to be tested at the DSX-1 panel or equivalent connection point and apply a DS1/E1 test signal.

at a stand-alone shelf in the Facility direction (toward the DSX),

Select Fault → Test → Transmissionto perform a facility transmission test on the DS1/E1 port.

in a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX network (end-to-end),

At the Near End, either select Fault → Test → Transmission to perform a terminal transmission test on the DS1/E1port, or connect a test set to the port to be tested at the DSX-1 panel or equivalent connection point and apply a DS1/E1 test signal.

4

Was the test successful (error free)?

If...

Then...

Yes,

Continue with Step 5.

No,

Proceed to Step 21.

5

Is the protection slot associated with the DS1/E1 circuit under test equipped with a companion circuit pack?

If...

Then...

Yes,

Continue with Step 6.

No,

Proceed to Step 9.

6

Select Fault → Protection Switch command to perform a manual switch from the current active circuit pack to the standby circuit pack. This may cause a hit and register some errors during the switch.

7

Was the circuit pack protection switch successful (recovered error free)?

If...

Then...

Yes,

Verify that the Standby circuit pack is now Active, and repeat Step 3 for the protection circuit pack. Then continue with Step 8.

No,

Proceed to Step 21.

8

Was the test successful (error free)?

If...

Then...

Yes,

Continue with Step 9.

No,

Proceed to Step 21.

9

Are you performing this test for a stand-alone Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX shelf or for end-to-end testing within a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX network?

If...

Then...

Stand-alone test,

Continue with Step 10.

End-to-end test,

Proceed to Step 15.

10

Remove any patch cords/fibers used to loop back the circuit under test and disconnect the test set from the DSX-1 panel or equivalent connection point, if required.

11

Delete any cross-connections entered to perform this procedure.
