Procedure 9-12.2: Establish DWDM linear network

Important!

This is not a standalone procedure. Perform this procedure only as directed by Procedure 9-12: Establish DWDM network.

Steps

Important!

This procedure assumes that the DWDM linear network is established by interconnecting one Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX equipped as DWDM End Terminal node at each end with Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX equipped as DWDM Add/Drop Ring nodes at intermediate nodes.

However, the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX may also be connected in a DWDM linear network with Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend equipped as an End Terminal or Add/Drop Ring node.

If connecting to an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend, refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) User Operations Guide, 365-372-325, as required, when performing this procedure.

If connecting to an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend, refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) User Operations Guide, 365-372-301, as required, when performing this procedure.

Nodes are provisioned and optical spans are established individually from one end of the linear network to the opposite end starting with an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX End Terminal node designated as the starting node. Continue through the linear network in the same direction until all nodes are provisioned.

This procedure assumes that all Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX shelves have been equipped with the required circuit packs for End Terminal or Add/Drop Ring nodes and software has been installed. If not, refer to Chapter 5, Node turnup procedures.

Ignore all alarms until the procedure is complete.

Complete the following steps to establish a DWDM linear network.

1

From the System View menu at the End Terminal designated as the starting node, select Configuration → Equipment to access the required OMD circuit pack and provision the OTS port parameters according to the work instructions.

2

Select View → Equipment to access the required OMD circuit pack and verify that the OTS port was provisioned correctly.

3

At the starting node, provision the required synchronization functions (for example, timing mode) according to work instructions.

Procedure 6-5: Network Element synchronization provisioning

4

At the adjacent Add/Drop Ring node, provision the required OTS ports and synchronization functions according to the work instructions.

Continue with Step 5.

Refer to the other product's documentation to provision the required OTS ports and synchronization functions.

Then proceed to Step 10.

5

From the System View menu at the Add/Drop Ring node, select Configuration → Equipment to access the OMD circuit pack in Function slot 1 and provision the OTS port parameters according to the work instructions.

Repeat this step for the companion OMD circuit pack in Function Slot 2.

Procedure 4-26: Provision optical transport signal (OTS) port

6

Select View → Equipment to access the required OMD circuit packs and verify that the OTS ports were provisioned correctly.

7

Important!

The Optical Channel (OCH) ports of the OMD circuit packs within a Function Group are required to be pre-equipped with pass-through fiber jumpers. This minimizes the installation time of pass-through connections when a service is established. Constant travel to pass-through nodes is avoided when a service is added.

Verify that the pass-through fiber jumpers have been installed that connect the Optical Channel (OCH) ports of the OMD circuit packs in the Function Group.

8

Important!

OCH cross-connections to/from an OCH port are used to inform the network element about manual fiber connections. This allows the network element to enable alarm reporting and variable optical attenuators. The variable optical attenuators are enabled only when an OCH port is the destination of an OCH cross-connection.

Select View → OCH Cross-Connections to verify that the required pass-through OCH cross-connections exist.

If required, select Configuration → OCH Cross-Connections to access the OCH Cross-Connection Wizard and provision the required pass-through OCH cross-connections.

9

At the Add/Drop Ring node, provision the required synchronization functions (for example, timing mode) according to work instructions.

Continue with Step 11.

11

At the other End Terminal node, provision the required OTS port and synchronization functions according to the work instructions.

Repeat Step 12 and Step 13 to connect and test the optical span.

Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend,

Refer to the other product's documentation to connect and test the optical span.

15

At each node in the linear network, click the Alarm List button and verify that no alarms are present. If required, clear any alarms that are present.
