Procedure 11-40.1: Configure new Ethernet ring protection (ERP) ring

- Overview

Use this procedure to configure a new Ethernet protection ring (ERP). See Figure 11-50, Ethernet ring protection.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  • Determine the node that will be the RPL Owner.

  • Determine the ports associated with the RPL link at the RPL Owner node.

  • Determine the ports at each node associated with the ERP.

  • Determine a VLAN to be used by the ERP for signaling switching requests (using R-APS PDUs). The VLAN must be a VLAN that is presently unused at every node in the ring. The same VLAN must then be used for the ERP at each node in the ring.

  • If required, determine the ERP Maintenance Domain Level (0-7). This command is optional. The ERP Maintenance Level must be the same at every node in the ERP..

Step

1

Login to the node that will be the RPL Owner.

2

From the System View menu, select Configuration → Data → Create/Modify/Delete ERP. Select the LNW70/170 with the port chosen for the ring protection link (RPL).

Result:

The ERP configuration screen displays.

3

Click the Add button, then enter the ERP ID and the port IDs (Port 1 and Port 2) associated with the ERP. At this time, select DISABLE for the ERP State.

The ports must be in the same virtual switch.

The port cannot be part of a spanning tree (the port’s spanning tree Port Mode must be disabled), or LAG, or another ERP instance.

Reference:

See Table 11-16, ERP configuration parameters (ent-erp).

4

Click Apply to create the ERP and associate the links. Click Close to exit.

5

Disable the port (Ethernet port or VCG port) associated with the chosen ring protection link (RPL ID).

From the System View, select Configuration → Equipment. Expand the circuit pack details.

  • For an Ethernet (LAN) port, highlight and Select the port.

From the Port Data tab, set Port Administration Control to DISABLE, then click Apply. Click Close.

  • For a VCG port, expand the VCG details.

Set VCG Membership to Disabled for both Input and Output Direction.

In the Apply To: drop-down box, select All Tributaries, This VCG.

    Click Apply, then click Close.

Note:

The RPL link will be enabled later after all the nodes on the ring have been provisioned and linked together.

6

From the System View menu, select Configuration → Data → Create/Modify/Delete ERP. Select the LNW70/170 with the port chosen for the ring protection link (RPL).

Result:

The ERP configuration screen displays.

7

Designate the port for the Ring Protection Link (RPL) for the ring. This command also makes this node the RPL Owner.

In the RPL ID box, enter the port AID for the RPL.

8

Enter the remaining parameters and select ENABLE for the ERP State. Click Apply to make your changes. Click Close to exit.

Reference:

Table 11-16, ERP configuration parameters (ent-erp).

9

Login to the next node in the ring and use Configuration → Data → Create/Modify/Delete ERP to provision the ERP and associate the links (ports). Set the ERP State to DISABLE until the nodes are wired together and the links are working.

  1. Click Apply to create the ERP and associate the links. Click Close.

  2. Wire the nodes together.

  3. When the links are working, enter Configuration → Data → Create/Modify/Delete ERP. Select the circuit pack.

  4. Set the ERP State to ENABLE, enter any remaining parameters, then click Apply.

Note:

Note that there will not be an RPL ID for any of the nodes in the ring except for the RPL Owner provisioned earlier.

10

Repeat Step 9 at each node around the ring until all nodes are configured.

11

Login to the RPL Owner node.

12

Enable the port (Ethernet port or VCG port) associated with the chosen ring protection link (RPL ID).

From the System View, select Configuration → Equipment. Expand the circuit pack details.

  • For an Ethernet (LAN) port, highlight and Select the port.

From the Port Data tab, set Port Administration Control to ENABLE, then click Apply. Click Close.

  • For a VCG port, expand the VCG details.

Set VCG Membership to Enabled for both Input and Output Direction.

In the Apply To: drop-down box, select All Tributaries, This VCG.

    Click Apply, then click Close.
