Procedure 2-7: Copy software generic to a remote shelf

- Overview

Use this procedure to copy a supported software generic from your Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend 9.1.x shelf to a supported remote NE.

Important!

This procedure requires that the software generic to be copied be installed in the Dormant areas of the NVMs installed in the LNW2 in your source Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend shelf.

You must also have OSI connectivity (via your OSI LAN or DCC) between the source and the destination NEs.

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

The following equipment is required:

  • CAT5 Ethernet cable with either a 10/100 hub or a cross-over cable for the LAN or IAO LAN port

  • Software generic in the Dormant areas of the NVMs installed in the LNW2 in your source Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend shelf.

- Before you begin

Before performing this procedure, refer to Before you begin in this chapter and Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

This procedure requires that the software generic being copied is installed in the Dormant areas of the NVMs installed in the LNW2 of the source Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend shelf. You must also have OSI connectivity (via OSI LAN or DCC) between the source and the destination NEs.

This procedure uses the cpy-prgm command to copy a software generic from an in-service Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend 9.1.x shelf to the following types of remote NEs:

  • Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend

  • Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX

  • Metropolis® DMXpress

  • Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5

  • DDM-2000 OC-3

  • DDM-2000 OC-12

  • DDM-2000 FiberReach

Important!

Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX and Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend are the only NEs that can accept a software generic of another product type. For example, if your remote NE is an Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf, the only product type that you can copy to the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf is dmxplore.

Steps

Complete the following steps to copy a supported software generic from your Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend 9.1.x shelf to a supported remote NE.

1

Establish a WaveStar® CIT session and log in to the source shelf (the shelf with the desired generic in the Dormant areas of the NVMs installed in the LNW2).

Reference:

Procedure 14-2: Connect Personal Computer (PC) and establish WaveStar® CIT session

2

From the System View menu, select Configuration → Software → Copy Software.

Result:

The Copy Software screen appears.

3

In the Copy Software screen, what are the Product Type and Release of the Dormant Software Generic?

If...

Then...

dmx and Release 7.x, 8.x, or 9.x

or

dmxtend and Release 4.x, 8.x, or 9.x

Your destination shelf must be either an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend 7.0/7.1/8.0/9.0/9.1 NE or Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX 5.0/5.1/8.0/9.0 NE, equipped with an LNW2.

You cannot copy the 7.x/8.x/9.x or 5.x/8.x/9.x generic to an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend or Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX destination shelf equipped with an LNW1; the 7.x/8.x/9.x or 5.x/8.x/9.x generic does not physically fit in the LNW1 controller.

dmx and 5.x or earlier

or

dmxtend and 3.x

Your destination shelf can be either an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend or Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX NE.

If your destination shelf is equipped with an LNW1, you cannot apply the generic on the destination shelf but you can then copy the generic to another NE from that shelf.

dmxpress

dmxplore

ddmoc3

ddmoc12

fbrrch

Release is not a concern for these product types.

Your destination shelf must be of the same product type as the Dormant generic you are copying. The generic can be applied to that destination shelf.

Your destination shelf can also be either an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend or Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX NE. However, you cannot apply the generic on the destination shelf but you can then copy the generic to another NE from that shelf.

4

From the Copy Software screen, select the following fields accordingly:

  1. In the pull-down menu entitled Destination TID: field, select the TID of the remote NE to which you wish to copy the software generic.

Currently, Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX, Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend, and Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-60 are the only products that can store a second software generic for either Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend, Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX, Metropolis® DMXpress, Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5, DDM-2000 OC-3, DDM-2000 OC-12, or FiberReach. For example, if your remote NE is a Metropolis® DMXpress shelf, then your software generic type must also be Metropolis® DMXpress.

  2. In the pull-down menu entitled Generic Product Type: select the type of software that you are copying. Your choices are:
    • DMX

    • DMXpress

    • DMXtend

    • DMXplore

    • DDM-2000 OC-3

    • DDM-2000 OC-12

    • FIBER REACH

  3. The Software Generic panel displays the generic that currently resides in the Dormant area of the NVMs installed in the LNW2 in your source Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend. The type of software is identified by the following entry in the Product Type column:
    • dmx = Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend

    • dmxtend = Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX

    • dmxpress = Metropolis® DMXpress

    • dmxplore = Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5

    • ddmoc3 = DDM OC-3

    • ddmoc12 = DDM-2000 OC-12

    • fbrrch = FIBER REACH

It is not necessary (or possible) to select the generic. The NE automatically selects the generic in the Dormant area. The information is provided so you are aware of the release number of the specific generic.

  4. Click OK.

Important!

During the remote copy, the destination shelf (assuming Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend, Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX, or Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5) produces the remote install/copy program IP Standing Condition (SC) autonomous message.

The source shelf (assuming Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend, Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX, Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5, or Metropolis® DMXpress) produces the copy program IP Standing Condition (SC) autonomous message.

If logged in to the NE, each condition is visible in the alarm list (click the Alarm List button from the System View) and the NE History log (select Reports → NE History Log from the System View).

Result:

While the copy is in progress, a progress indicator window is present.

The download takes approximately 30 minutes.

The copy can be cancelled any time by pressing the Cancel button on the progress screen.

5

When the transfer is complete, a message window appears, stating Copy Software Complete. Click OK.

Result:

The software generic is now on the destination shelf.

6

Important!

If your destination shelf is either an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend NE or an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX NE, do NOT insert a new circuit pack in the shelf until after you apply the new software generic and clear the dormant/exec version mismatch condition.

Do you wish to apply (activate) the software generic that you recently downloaded to the dormant area of the destination shelf?

If...

Then...

Yes
