Procedure 14-7: Perform end-to-end optical line test

- Overview

Use this procedure to verify the integrity of an OC-N line or STM-N multiplex section.

Important!

This test must be performed locally at each Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf location associated with the optical span(s) being tested.

- Privilege level

You must log in as either a Privileged, General, or Maintenance user to complete this procedure.

Important!

It is assumed that each Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 node has passed the appropriate end-to-end transmission tests. If these tests have not been completed, refer to Procedure 14-8: Perform DS1/E1/DS3/E3 transmission test and perform the tests as required.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin and Required equipment and in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  3. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure.

Steps

Complete the following steps to verify the integrity of an OC-N line or STM-N multiplex section.

1

From the System View menu, select Performance → View PM Reports → OCn Line or Performance → View PM Reports → STMn MS.

Result:

The OCn Line/STMn MS PM Report window opens.

2

Expand the CP main-1 or main-2 circuit pack by clicking on the plus sign (+), select Port 1, and then click Select.

Result:

The port performance monitoring parameters appear.

3

Provision the Time Period parameter 15 Min, the Monitored Date parameter Current Date, the Monitor Time parameter Current, and the Monitor Level parameter 1-UP. Then move all the Near End Available Parameters to Selected Parameters by clicking Select All.

4

Important!

Near End and Far End performance monitoring parameters are supported.

Select the Far End Tab and move all the Far End Available Parameters to Selected Parameters by clicking Select All. Click Apply to obtain the PM Report.

Result:

The OCn Line/STMn MS PM Report appears. The report should be empty, indicating no errors.

5

Wait 20 seconds and click Refresh on the PM Report window. If a 15-minute boundary is crossed during the 20-second wait period, repeat this step.

Result:

If the report is still empty, the optical span is error-free. Click Close.

6

Did report indicate any errors?

If...

Then...

Yes

Continue with Step 7.

No

Proceed to Step 8.

7

Trouble may be in optical and/or fiber connections. Trouble may also be in circuit packs. If the report indicated trouble when the report was obtained from the near end of the span, trouble may be in the receive direction. If the report indicated trouble when the report was obtained from the far end of the span, trouble may be in the transmit direction. Check optical fiber and connections. Clean optical fiber connections.

Reference:

Procedure 14-3: Clean optical fibers, dual LC adapters and LC lightguide buildouts (LBOs)

If no trouble was found in the optical fiber, click the Alarm List button to obtain the NE Alarm List. Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Maintenance and Trouble-Clearing Guide to clear/isolate the trouble.

8

If required, repeat this procedure from Step 2 to verify the integrity of another optical line; otherwise, click Close.

9

Have you retrieved error-free performance-monitoring reports from all shelf locations associated with the optical lines being tested?

If...

Then...

Yes

STOP! End of Procedure.

No

Repeat this procedure from Step 1 at the other end of the optical span.
