Procedure 6-23: Replace VLNC33 3-Port 100 Optical Fast Ethernet Port Expander circuit pack

Overview

Use this procedure to replace the VLNC33 3-Port 100 Optical Fast Ethernet Port Expander circuit pack.

Required equipment

In addition to the equipment listed in Required equipment, optical loopback cables, LBOs, and optical fiber cleaning tools may also be required if loopbacks are performed.

Refer to the list of Class 1 SFP transceivers that are approved by Alcatel-Lucent in Procedure 6-6: Replace pluggable transmission module.

Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Installation and System Turn-Up Guide, as required, when removing and/or installing pluggable transmission modules.

Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge information in Chapter 1, Safety.
Ensure that the correct replacement circuit pack is available for replacement.
If required, ensure that the correct pluggable transmission modules are available for replacement.

Steps

Complete the following steps to replace the VLNC33 3-Port 100 Optical Fast Ethernet Port Expander circuit pack.


1	Important! The VLNC33 circuit pack is a dumb circuit pack that serves as an extension of the VLNC42B circuit pack. The VLNC33 circuit pack provides the VLNC42B circuit pack with three additional optical Fast Ethernet ports. If required, disconnect the optical cables and remove any pluggable transmission modules from the circuit pack. Reference: Procedure 6-6: Replace pluggable transmission module
2	Remove the circuit pack by grasping the inner edge of the locking lever, and applying a constant pressure, pull the lever forward and remove the circuit pack.
3	Ensure that all optical fiber connectors and couplings are properly cleaned on the replacement Ethernet circuit pack. Important! Signal performance may be degraded and the fiber interface surfaces damaged if the connections and couplings are not cleaned properly. 4	Important! Pluggable transmission modules are shipped with a dust plug installed into the optical ports to maintain cleanliness during storage and/or transportation. It is recommended that the dust plug be kept in place to maintain cleanliness until the optical fiber is connected. With proper care and handling, cleaning the pluggable transmission modules should not be necessary. If required, clean the pluggable transmission module. 5	Perform the following: Holding the circuit pack vertically, rotate the circuit pack 90 degrees to the right (clockwise). The faceplate LEDs should be on your right. Open the faceplate latch and seat the circuit pack in the C slot by applying steady pressure to the faceplate and latch assembly. If both the original circuit pack and the replacement circuit pack fail when no other transmission circuit packs are installed in the shelf, replace the SYSCTL circuit pack. Refer to Procedure 6-3: Upgrade or replace a SYSCTL (VLNC2) circuit pack.
6	Important! The VLNC33 circuit pack provides the VLNC42B circuit pack with three additional optical Fast Ethernet ports. If required, install the pluggable transmission modules and reconnect the optical cables. Reference: Procedure 6-6: Replace pluggable transmission module End of steps
