Zero tolerance safety principles highlight the highest risk activities identified for the Telecommunications sector and for Alcatel-Lucent operations (driving, working at heights and working in the proximity of electrical power).
EHS hazards and risks need to be properly assessed, appropriate controls put in place, and only competent, experienced and, if required, appropriately certified employees may perform certain specified activities. Circumventing safety procedures and not utilizing safety equipment or PPE is not acceptable conduct.
Alcatel-Lucent employees and directly supervised contractors and subcontractors shall comply with these principles, applicable EHS laws, regulations, directives, commitments with customers, company requirements, and with other requirements to which Alcatel-Lucent subscribes.
- Never work under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Never work on energized equipment or in the vicinity of high voltage power transmission lines unless qualified.
- Never exceed speed limits or travel at speeds which are dangerous for the type of road, vehicle, or conditions.
- Never use a hand held phone or text while driving.
- Always wear seat belts when travelling in, or operating vehicles.
- Always use the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment and Fall Arrest systems when working at heights.
- Always have a lift plan when performing a critical lift.

EHS field audits are performed globally on a select percentage of our subcontractors. These audits are mainly focused on high risk work activity, but that is not the only criteria used by Alcatel-Lucent. The questionnaire and field report filed by the EHS auditor is used to determine whether or not the subcontractor is in substantial compliance with ALU's recommended EHS practices. An Action Item Register is developed for those items that require follow-up. The register provides a timeline (normally 30 days) for each item's completion and a schedule is developed for longer term items, when they are noted during the audit.
Failure to follow safety guidelines or our Zero Tolerance Safety Principles and other EHS non-compliance may result in consequences depending on the nature and severity of non-compliance.
