Procedure 10-16: Add SONET/GbE/Data client signals

- Overview

Use this procedure to add a SONET/GbE/Data clien signal to a DWDM network.

Important!

This procedure assumes that the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend shelf and network have been properly equipped and tested. If the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend shelf has not been properly equipped, refer to Chapter 5, Node turnup procedures. If the DWDM network has not been properly configured, refer to Procedure 9-10: Establish DWDM network and/or Procedure 9-12: Establish DWDM OTU2 line.

Supported client port configurations

The XM10G/8 circuit pack supports a mix of 1GE, FC100, FICON, FC200, FICON_EXP, and/or SONET OC3/12/48 client signals. The client signals are mapped into a single STS-192 and transmitted as an OTN OTU-2 signal.

Mixing client signals is supported with the following restrictions.

  • OC-48, FC200, FICON_EXP signals are only supported on client ports 1, 3, 5, and 7.

  • When the Signal Type parameter is provisioned to OC-48, FC200, FICON_EXP for client port 1, 3, 5, or 7, then the next adjacent client port is unavailable for use. For example, if the Signal Type parameter for client port 1 is provisioned to OC-48, then client port 2 is unavailable for use (STNA - Signal Type Not Available).

You must login as either a Privileged or General user to complete this procedure.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin and Required equipment in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  3. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure.

  4. Verify that the work instructions specify the terminating nodes, SONET/GbE/Data signal add/drop optical port addresses, client signal port addresses, required pluggable transmission modules, and the client signal port parameters to provision.

Steps

Complete the following steps to add a SONET/GbE/Data client signal to a DWDM network.

Using the work instructions, determine the DWDM network configuration and identify the terminating nodes for the client signal being added.

Important!

It may be helpful to make a sketch of the DWDM network to visualize the path of the client signal through the network.

At the terminating nodes, click the Alarm List button to obtain an NE Alarm List and verify that no alarms are present. Clear all alarms before continuing this procedure.

At the terminating nodes, select View → Equipment to access the required XM10G/8 circuit pack and verify that the client port Signal Type parameter is provisioned correctly.

If required, select Configuration → Equipment to access the required client port and provision the Signal Type parameter according to the work instructions.

At the terminating nodes, verify/install the required pluggable transmission modules being used for access according to the work instructions.

At the terminating nodes, select View → Equipment to access the required XM10G/8 circuit pack and verify that the circuit pack/pluggable transmission module/client port parameters are provisioned correctly.

If required, select Configuration → Equipment to access the required circuit pack/pluggable transmission module/client port and perform additional provisioning.

At both terminating nodes, perform the following to connect the optical fibers between the client port and the SONET/GbE/Data add/drop optical port.

  • Clean and connect the optical fibers to the required OUT connectors on the client port and the SONET/GbE/Data add/drop optical port.

  • Measure the optical receive power of the optical fiber at the client port and the SONET/GbE/Data add/drop optical port using an optical power meter. Select the appropriate LBO to attenuate the receive signal to the middle of the allowable optical receive power range. (Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-324, for the optical specifications of the circuit packs and pluggable transmission modules.)

  • Clean and connect the optical fibers to the required IN connectors on the client port and the SONET/GbE/Data add/drop optical port.

Important!

If the Port Monitoring Mode is provisioned to NMON, the client port is not monitored/alarmed and the client port will not automatically transition to the IS (in-service) state when a good signal (not LOS) is detected. If the Port Monitoring Mode is provisioned to AUTO, the client port automatically transitions to the IS (in-service) state when a good signal (not LOS) is detected, and the client port is monitored/alarmed. If the Port Monitoring Mode is provisioned to IS, the client port is monitored and alarms are reported.

At the terminating nodes, select View → Equipment to access the required client ports and verify the value of the Port Monitoring Mode parameter.

If required, select Configuration → Equipment to access client ports and change the value of the Port Monitoring Mode parameter.
