Procedure 12-1.1: Upgrade high-speed OC-3 UPSR connections at node with single-rate circuit packs

Important!

This is not a stand-alone procedure. Perform this procedure only as directed by another procedure.

Steps

Important!

When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS, section DCC channel failed, and neighbor SYSCTL CP unavailable alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.

Complete the following steps to upgrade the in-service UPSR connections at a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node connected to the UPSR using single-rate circuit packs in the Main slots.

1

If required, verify the active/standby status of the OC-3 circuit pack in Main slot M1 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

Procedure 12-1.3: Verify active/standby status of circuit pack/port to be upgraded

2

Important!

The Ring Upgrade Mode is required for cross-connections and provisioning data to be mapped to the replacement circuit pack.

At the WaveStar® CIT System View, select Configuration → Ring Upgrade Mode.

Result:

A dialog box appears asking you to confirm changing the NE Mode to Ring Upgrade Mode. Click Yes.

The ABN LED is lighted on the SYSCTL circuit pack faceplate and the WaveStar® CIT Alarm List shows the Ring Upgrade Mode as Not Alarmed.

For more information about the Ring Upgrade Mode, refer to Ring Upgrade Mode.

3

Important!

If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch.

Open the faceplate latch on the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1.

If Main slot M1 is equipped with an...

Then...

LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack,

Perform the following:

  1. Remove the LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack from the shelf.

  2. Insert the center divider between the M1 and A1/B1 sections of the slot.

  3. Install the replacement OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1.

  4. Install the replacement DS1 circuit pack in function slot A1/B1.

Result:

The replacement circuit packs in Main slot M1 and function slot A1/B1 are tested and autoprovisioned.

The system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M1 and function slot A1/B1. The system also reports an inc. OC3 LOS alarm for Main slot M1.

LNW40, LNW302, or LNW601 OC-3 circuit pack,

Replace the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 with the replacement OC-12 OLIU circuit pack.

Result:

The replacement circuit pack in Main slot M1 is tested and autoprovisioned.

The system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition and an inc. OC3 LOS alarm for Main slot M1.

If required at both ends of the optical span to be upgraded, perform the following to connect the replacement OC-12 circuit pack in Main slot M1 and the required OC-12 circuit pack/port at the opposite end of the upgraded OC-12 optical span:

  1. Clean and connect the transmit optical fibers.

  2. Measure the optical receive power of the receive fibers using an optical power meter. Select the appropriate LBO to attenuate the receive signal to the middle of the allowable optical receive power range. (Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-324 for the SONET optical specifications of the OC-12 circuit packs.)

  3. Clean and connect the receive fibers.

Result:

The inc. OC3 LOS alarms clear. Transmission is now supported on the upgraded optical span.

Procedure 14-4: Perform connection and verification of optical facility

5

Important!

Perform this step only if the opposite end of the upgraded optical span is an OC-12 port in a Function/Growth group and the Optical Synchronization Source is to be reprovisioned to the upgrade OC-12 port.

If required at the opposite end of the upgraded optical span, select Configuration → Timing/Sync to reprovision the Optical Synchronization Source to the upgrade OC-12 port on the OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in slot 2 of the Function/Growth group.

Procedure 6-5: Network Element synchronization provisioning

6

Important!

The UPD/INIT button does not work during this upgrade.

At the System View select Configuration → Update System → Upgrade. Select main-1 (default) as the Directed Slot Choice and click OK.

Result:

A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes.

If Main slot M2 is equipped with an...

Then...

LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack,

The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M1 and function slot A1/B1 clears, and the system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2 and function slot A2/B2.

LNW40, LNW302, or LNW601 OC-3 circuit pack,

The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M1 clears, and the system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2.

7

If required, verify the active/standby status of the OC-3 circuit pack in Main slot M2 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

Reference:

Procedure 12-1.3: Verify active/standby status of circuit pack/port to be upgraded

8

Important!

Do not reconnect the optical fibers until instructed to do so. The optical fibers are reconnected after the OC-3 circuit pack/port is upgraded at each end of the optical span.

If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch.

Open the faceplate latch on the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2.

If Main slot M2 is equipped with an...

Then...

LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack,

Perform the following:

  1. Remove the LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack from the shelf.

  2. Insert the center divider between the M2 and A2/B2 sections of the slot.

  3. Install the replacement OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2.

  4. Install the replacement DS1 circuit pack in function slot A2/B2.

Result:

The replacement circuit packs in Main slot M2 and function slot A2/B2 are tested and autoprovisioned.

The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2 and function slot A2/B2 clears, and the system reports an inc. OC12 LOS alarm for Main slot M2. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes in the ring.

LNW40, LNW302, or LNW601 OC-3 circuit pack,

Replace the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 with the replacement OC-12 OLIU circuit pack.

Result:

The replacement circuit pack in Main slot M2 is tested and autoprovisioned.

The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2 clears, and the system reports an inc. OC12 LOS alarm for Main slot M2. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes in the ring.
