Use this procedure to upgrade an in-service OC-192 span to a DWDM OTS span in a 1+1/UPSR network.
You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.
The following equipment is required to perform this procedure:
One OMD circuit pack with an available Optical Channel (OCH) port at each end of the OC-n span to be upgraded. An empty Function/Growth slot is required at each node. For equipage guidelines and restrictions, refer to Procedure 4-24: Install DWDM optical multiplexer/demultiplexer circuit packs.
If the OC-192 span to be upgraded is equipped with OC-192 OLIU circuit packs with pluggable transmission modules that do not match any available Optical Channel (OCH) ports on the OMD circuit pack, one DWDM pluggable transmission module that matches an available Optical Channel (OCH) port on the OMD circuit pack is required at each node.
Important!
Release 5.1.1 or later software is required to support this upgrade.
The LNW141 OC-192 OLIU with DWDM-compatible pluggable transmission modules (channels 9520 - 9590) is DWDM compatible.
NOTICE Equipment damage |
Rocking circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them can damage circuit pack and/or shelf connectors.
Do not rock circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them. Carefully slide circuit packs into or out of the shelf slot.
NOTICE Service-disruption hazard |
Removing or installing circuit packs during a System Reset can cause system errors.
Do not remove or install a circuit pack during a System Reset. If a System Reset occurs, wait until the System Reset is complete, then remove or install the circuit pack.
Prior to performing this procedure:
Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge information in Chapter 1, Safety.
Verify that the work instructions specify the affected OC-n circuit pack/pluggable transmission module/port and protection group AIDs (if required).
Verify that the work instructions specify the circuit pack/pluggable transmission module/port parameters and values to be provisioned.
Review the applicable Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Software Release Description for any detailed procedures or cautions that may apply to this span upgrade procedure.
Determine the local operating procedures for removing optical fibers from an OC-n port. Local operating procedures may vary. One method is to disconnect the optical fibers. Another method is to verify the OC-n port active/standby status, perform manual switches if the OC-n port is active, and then disconnect the optical fibers.
Important!
When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS, section DCC channel failed, and neighbor SYSCTL CP unavailable alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.
Use this procedure to upgrade an in-service OC-192 span to a DWDM OTS span.
1 |
From office records and work instructions, determine the current network configuration. Note how the nodes are connected and make a drawing to reference during this upgrade procedure.
2 |
Log in to a node that terminates the OC-192 span to be upgraded. Reference: Procedure 14-2: Connect Personal Computer (PC) and establish WaveStar® CIT session
3 |
Using the WaveStar® CIT verify the status of the node. Reference: Procedure 12-16.1: Verify status of node
4 |
Using the work instructions, identify the OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module (PTM)/port that terminates the OC-n span to be upgraded. Select View → Equipment to access the required OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module/port. Record the OLIU circuit pack type, pluggable transmission module type, port rate, and frequency.
5 |
At the opposite end of the OC-192 span to be upgraded, log in to the node and repeat Step 3 through Step 4. Then continue with the next step. Reference: Procedure 14-2: Connect Personal Computer (PC) and establish WaveStar® CIT session
6 |
Important! An OMD circuit pack with an available OCH port is required in a Function/Growth slot at each node that terminates the OC-192 span to be upgraded. If required, install an OMD circuit pack in a Function/Growth slot. Reference: Procedure 4-24: Install DWDM optical multiplexer/demultiplexer circuit packs
7 |
If required, verify the active/standby status of the required OC-192 port and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active OC-192 port. Reference: Procedure 12-16.2: Verify active/standby status of OC-192 port
8 |
Removing the wrong fiber connections will result in a service interruption. Using the work instructions, ensure that you remove only the fiber connections for the optical span being upgraded. Important! If the OC-192 port is active for transmission, disconnecting the optical fibers causes transmission switches. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch. Disconnect the required OC-192 span fibers from the OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module/port. Result: Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) may occur if traffic exists on the OC-192 port. If through traffic exists (UPSRs only), transmission hits (less than 60 ms) may occur at the nodes where the traffic is added/dropped. The system reports an inc. OCN LOS alarm for the OC-192 port when the OC-192 span fibers are disconnected. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes in the network.
9 |
At the node at the opposite end of OC-192 span to be upgraded, repeat Step 6 through Step 8. Then continue with the next step.
10 |
If required, establish a DWDM point-to-point network using the span fibers to connect the OTS ports of the OMD circuit packs. Reference: Procedure 9-10: Establish DWDM network
11 |
Important! The provisioned Expected Frequency of the OC-192 DWDM pluggable transmission module must match the OCH port frequency. If the provisioned Expected Frequency of the OC-192 DWDM pluggable transmission module and the OCH port frequency are different, attempts to provision an OCH cross-connection will be denied. At the terminating nodes, install/provision the required OC-192 DWDM pluggable transmission module, and connect the OC-192 port to the required OCH port of the OMD circuit pack to add the OC-192 signal to the DWDM OTS span. Result: The inc. OCN LOS alarms clear. Transmission is now supported on the upgraded optical span. Reference: Procedure 10-14: Add optical channel (OCH) to DWDM network
12 |
At each node in the upgraded DWDM OTS span, click the Alarm List button in the top right corner of the System View to view the NE Alarm List and verify that no alarms or standing conditions are present. Refer to the appropriate trouble clearing procedures to clear all existing alarms and standing conditions. Important! It is recommended that the network element database be backed up to a remote OS (for example, OMS) after an upgrade. This creates a current backup copy that includes the replacement circuit packs. The remote OS could use this backup copy to restore the network element database in the event of a catastrophic failure. Attempts to restore the network element database using a backup copy created prior to the upgrade may result in circuit pack failures. At each node in the upgraded DWDM OTS span, back up the network element database using the Configuration → Software → Remote Backup command. Reference: End of steps |
