Procedure 12-23.1: Back out OC-12 1+1 network upgrade (main-to-main)

Important!

This is not a stand-alone procedure. Perform this procedure only as directed by another procedure.

Steps

Important!

When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.

Complete the following steps to back out an OC-12 1+1 network to an OC-48 1+1 network upgrade where the nodes are connected using the Main slots at both nodes.

1

Identify the last node that was upgraded.

If the last node upgraded is...

Then...

the near-end Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node (starting node) and the 1+1 network upgrade is complete (all nodes connected to the 1+1 network using the Main slots are in the Ring Upgrade Mode),

Identify and log in to the near-end Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node (starting node) in the 1+1 network and continue with the next step.

the farend node and both Main slots have been upgraded,

Log in to the farend node and proceed to Step 10.

the farend node and only Main slot M1 has been upgraded,

Log in to the farend node and proceed to Step 12.

2

If required at the near-end node (starting node), verify the active/standby status of the OC-48 circuit pack in Main slot M1 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

If the working card (slot 1 card) is to be upgraded and is active, perform an optional manual transmission switch.

  1. Select Fault → Protection Switch.

  2. Select the required 1+1 Line and click Select.

  3. Select the "Manual to Protection" Switch Type and click Apply.

If the protect card (slot 2 card) is to be upgraded and is active, perform an optional manual transmission switch.

  1. Select Fault → Protection Switch.

  2. Select the required 1+1 Line and click Select.

  3. Select the "Manual to Working" Switch Type and click Apply.

3

Identify and log in to the far-end node in the 1+1 network.

Procedure 14-2: Connect Personal Computer (PC) and establish WaveStar® CIT session

4

If required at the far-end node, verify the active/standby status of the OC-48 circuit pack in Main slot M1 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

Procedure 12-23.4: Verify active/standby status of circuit pack to be replaced

5

At the near-end node, open the faceplate latch on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Then replace the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 with the temporary replacement OC-48 OLIU circuit pack.

Result:

The system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M1 . Alarms may also be reported at other nodes.

6

Measure the optical receive power of the receive fiber using an optical power meter. Select the appropriate LBO to attenuate the receive signal to the middle of the allowable optical receive power range. (Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-324 for the SONET optical specifications of the OC-48 OLIU circuit packs.)

7

Clean all fiber connectors, and connect the transmit and receive optical fibers to the temporary replacement OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1.

DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

If the OLIU circuit packs being upgraded carry Ethernet traffic with LCAS enabled, transmission hits (up to 6 seconds) may occur as Ethernet traffic is switched.

The length of the service hits varies based on shelf equipage and TDM/Ethernet service provisioning.

Important!

The UPD/INIT button does not work during this upgrade.

At the near-end node, select Configuration → Update System → Upgrade. Select main-1 (default) as the Directed Slot Choice and click OK.

Result:

A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes.

The temporary replacement OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 is tested and autoprovisioned.

The system performs an automatic path protection switch, and all traffic is now active on Main slot M1. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) occur as traffic switches from the circuit pack in Main slot M2 to the circuit pack in Main slot M1.

The unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M1 clears, and the system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes.

Transmission is now supported on the optical span between Main slot M1 and the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack at the far-end node.

9

Important!

Do not reconnect the optical fibers until instructed to do so. The optical fibers are reconnected after the OC-48 circuit pack is backed out at each end of the optical span.

At the near-end node, open the faceplate latch on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Replace the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 with the original OC-12 OLIU circuit pack.

Result:

The original circuit pack in Main slot M2 is tested and autoprovisioned.

The unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2 clears. The system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition and an inc. OC48 LOS alarm for Main slot M2.

Reference:

Procedure 4-2: Install OLIU circuit packs in Main slots

10

At the far-end node, open the faceplate latch on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Then replace the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 with the original OC-12 OLIU circuit pack.

Result:

The system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2.

The FAULT LED may light on the circuit packs in the Main slots, and the opposite end of the optical spans may report inc. OCN sig. degrade (BER) and section DCC channel failed alarms.

Procedure 4-2: Install OLIU circuit packs in Main slots

11

At both ends of the optical span to be backed out, perform the following to connect the original OC-12 circuit pack in the Main slot M2 and the original OC-12 circuit pack in Main slot M2 at the opposite end of the original OC-12 optical span:

  1. Clean and connect the transmit optical fibers.

  2. Measure the optical receive power of the receive fibers using an optical power meter. Select the appropriate LBO to attenuate the receive signal to the middle of the allowable optical receive power range. (Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-324 for the SONET optical specifications of the OC-12 circuit packs.)

  3. Clean and connect the receive fibers.

Result:

At the opposite end of the original OC-12 optical span, the inc. OC48 LOS alarm clears.
