Important!
This is not a stand-alone procedure. Perform this procedure only as directed by another procedure.
Important!
When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.
Complete the following steps to upgrade an in-service OC-3 1+1 network to an OC-12 1+1 network where the nodes are connected using the Main slots at both nodes.
1 |
Identify and log in to the near-end Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node (starting node) in the 1+1 network to be upgraded. Reference: Procedure 14-2: Connect Personal Computer (PC) and establish WaveStar® CIT session |
2 |
If required at the near-end node, verify the active/standby status of the OC-3 circuit pack in Main slot M1 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack. If the working card (slot 1 card) is to be upgraded and is active, perform an optional manual transmission switch. If the protect card (slot 2 card) is to be upgraded and is active, perform an optional manual transmission switch. Reference: Procedure 12-19.4: Verify active/standby status of circuit pack to be replaced |
3 |
Important! The Ring Upgrade Mode is required for cross-connections and provisioning data to be mapped to the replacement circuit pack. At the WaveStar® CIT System View, select Configuration → Ring Upgrade Mode. Result: A dialog box appears asking you to confirm changing the NE Mode to Ring Upgrade Mode. Click Yes. The ABN LED is lighted on the SYSCTL circuit pack faceplate and the WaveStar® CIT Alarm List shows the Ring Upgrade Mode as Not Alarmed. For more information about the Ring Upgrade Mode, refer to Ring Upgrade Mode. |
4 |
Identify and log in to the far-end Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node in the 1+1 network to be upgraded. Reference: Procedure 14-2: Connect Personal Computer (PC) and establish WaveStar® CIT session |
5 |
If required at the far-end node, verify the active/standby status of the OC-3 circuit pack in Main slot M1 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

Important! If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch. At the near-end and far-end nodes, open the faceplate latch on the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Replace the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 with the replacement OC-12 OLIU circuit pack. Result: The replacement circuit pack in Main slot M1 is tested and autoprovisioned. The system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition and an inc. OC3 LOS alarm for Main slot M1. Reference: Procedure 4-2: Install OLIU circuit packs in Main slots |
8 |
At both ends of the optical span to be upgraded, perform the following to connect the replacement OC-12 circuit pack in the Main slot M1 and the replacement OC-12 circuit pack in Main slot M1 at the opposite end of the upgraded OC-12 optical span:
Result: The inc. OC3 LOS alarms clear. Transmission is now supported on the upgraded optical span. Reference: Procedure 14-4: Perform connection and verification of optical facility |
9 |
Important! The UPD/INIT button does not work during this upgrade. At the far-end node, at the System View select Configuration → Update System → Upgrade. Select main-1 (default) as the Directed Slot Choice and click OK. Result: A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes. The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M1 clears, and the system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2. |
10 |
If required at the near-end and far-end nodes, verify the active/standby status of the OC-3 circuit pack in Main slot M2 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

Important! Do not reconnect the optical fibers until instructed to do so. The optical fibers are reconnected after the OC-3 circuit pack is upgraded at each end of the optical span. If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch. At the far-end node, open the faceplate latch on the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Replace the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 with the replacement OC-12 OLIU circuit pack. Result: The replacement circuit pack in Main slot M2 is tested and autoprovisioned. The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2 clears, and the system reports an inc. OC12 LOS alarm for Main slot M2. Alarms may also be reported at the opposite end of the optical span to be upgraded. Reference: Procedure 4-2: Install OLIU circuit packs in Main slots
