NOTICE Service-disruption hazard |
If a node has been taken out of the Ring Upgrade Mode, the node cannot be returned to the original pre-upgrade state without affecting service.
All nodes connected to the 1+1 network using the Main slots must be in the provisioned Ring Upgrade Mode.
Important!
This procedure starts at the last node upgraded. The last node upgraded must be connected to the 1+1 network using the Main slots. Suspending an upgrade at a node connected to the 1+1 network using port pairs in the Function/Growth slots is not supported.
This procedure assumes that the last node upgraded is a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend.
Use this procedure to temporarily suspend an OC-12 1+1 to OC-48 1+1 upgrade where the near-end and far-end nodes are connected to the 1+1 network using single-rate circuit packs in the Main slots.
To temporarily stop the upgrade at a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node connected to the 1+1 network using multirate circuit packs in the Main/Function/Growth slots, refer to Procedure 12-27: Suspend UPSR/1+1 upgrade at node (multirate circuit packs).
Suspending an upgrade in progress temporarily stops the upgrade.
To return all nodes in the 1+1 network to their pre-upgrade state, refer to Procedure 12-23: Back out OC-12 1+1 to OC-48 1+1 upgrade (single-rate circuit packs).
When the 1+1 upgrade is temporarily suspended before completion, one span is operating at the OC-12 line rate and the other span at the OC-48 line rate. This requires that the near-end and far-end nodes be equipped with an OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in one Main slot and an OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in the other Main slot. These nodes must be connected to the 1+1 network using the Main slots. Suspending an upgrade when a node is connected to the 1+1 network using port pairs in the Function/Growth slots is not supported.
To continue to operate temporarily with different circuit packs in the Main slots, the near-end node (starting node) and the far-end node must remain in the Ring Upgrade Mode.
NOTICE Equipment damage |
Rocking circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them can damage circuit pack and/or shelf connectors.
Do not rock circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them. Carefully slide circuit packs into or out of the shelf slot.
NOTICE Service-disruption hazard |
Removing or installing circuit packs during a System Reset can cause system errors.
Do not remove or install a circuit pack during a System Reset. If a System Reset occurs, wait until the System Reset is complete, then remove or install the circuit pack.
Prior to performing this procedure:
Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.
Review the applicable Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Software Release Description for any detailed procedures or cautions that may apply to this suspend procedure.
Important!
This procedure starts at the last node upgraded. This procedure assumes that the last node upgraded is a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend connected to a 1+1 network using the Main slots.
When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.
Complete the following steps to temporarily suspend an OC-12 1+1 to OC-48 1+1 upgrade where the near-end and far-end nodes are connected to the 1+1 network using the Main slots.
1 |

If the OLIU circuit packs being upgraded carry Ethernet traffic with LCAS enabled, transmission hits (up to 6 seconds) may occur as Ethernet traffic is switched. The length of the service hits varies based on shelf equipage and TDM/Ethernet service provisioning. Important! The UPD/INIT button does not work during this upgrade. At the near-end node, select Configuration → Update System → Upgrade. Select main-1 (default) as the Directed Slot Choice and click OK. Result: A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes. The temporary replacement OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 is tested and autoprovisioned. The system performs an automatic path protection switch, and all traffic is now active on Main slot M1. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) occur as traffic switches from the circuit pack in Main slot M2 to the circuit pack in Main slot M1. The unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M1 clears, and the system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes. Transmission is now supported on the optical span between Main slot M1 and the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack at the far-end node.
9 |
Important! Do not reconnect the optical fibers until instructed to do so. The optical fibers are reconnected after the OC-48 circuit pack is backed out at each end of the optical span. At the near-end node, open the faceplate latch on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Replace the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 with the original OC-12 OLIU circuit pack. Result: The original circuit pack in Main slot M2 is tested and autoprovisioned. The unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2 clears. The system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition and an inc. OC48 LOS alarm for Main slot M2. Reference: Procedure 4-2: Install OLIU circuit packs in Main slots

At the far-end node, select Configuration → Update System → Upgrade. Select main-2 as the Directed Slot Choice and click OK. Result: A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes. The original OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 is tested and autoprovisioned. The system performs an automatic path protection switch, and all traffic is now active on Main slot M2. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) occur as traffic switches from the circuit pack in Main slot M1 to the circuit pack in Main slot M2. The unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2 clears, and the system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M1. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes. Transmission is now supported on the original optical span between Main slot M2 and the original OC-12 OLIU circuit pack at the near-end node.
13 |
If required at the near-end node, verify the active/standby status of the OC-48 circuit pack in Main slot M1 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack. If the working card (slot 1 card) is to be upgraded and is active, perform an optional manual transmission switch. If the protect card (slot 2 card) is to be upgraded and is active, perform an optional manual transmission switch. Reference: Procedure 12-23.4: Verify active/standby status of circuit pack to be replaced
14 |
At the far-end node, open the faceplate latch on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Replace the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 with the temporary replacement OC-48 OLIU circuit pack. Result: The temporary replacement OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 is tested and autoprovisioned. The unexpected circuit pack type alarm for Main slot M1 clears, and the system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M1. The system also reports an inc. OC12 LOS alarm for Main slot M1. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes. Reference: Procedure 4-2: Install OLIU circuit packs in Main slots
| ||||||||
