Procedure 10-4: Establish DS3 or E3 service

- Overview

Use this procedure to establish DS3 or E3 service.

Important!

This procedure assumes that the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf and network have been properly equipped and tested. If the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf has not been properly equipped, refer to Chapter 5, Node turnup procedures. If the network has not been properly configured, refer to Chapter 9, Network configuration procedures.

- Privilege level

You must log in as either a Privileged or General user to complete this procedure.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin and Required equipment in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  3. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure.

  4. Verify that the work instructions specify the terminating nodes, pass-through nodes, DS3/E3 port addresses, the DS3/E3 port parameters to provision, and the cross-connections to be established.

Steps

Complete the following steps to establish DS3 or E3 service.

1

Click the Alarm List button from the System View menu to obtain an NE Alarm List and verify that no alarms are present. Clear all alarms before continuing this procedure.

2

At the terminating nodes of the circuit being established, determine which DS3/E3 ports are to be put into service and what port parameters to provision using the work instructions.

3

At the terminating nodes, select Configuration → Equipment. Expand the required Function Group and select the DS3/E3 port for the circuit being established. Provision parameters as required.

If the Port Monitoring Mode is provisioned NMON, the port is not monitored/alarmed and the port will not automatically transition to the IS (in-service) state when a good signal (not LOS) is detected. If the Port Monitoring Mode is provisioned AUTO, the port automatically transitions to the IS (in-service) state when a good signal (not LOS) is detected, and the port is monitored/alarmed.

Procedure 4-8: Provision VLNC50/52/55 DS3/E3 ports for service

4

Verify that the DS3/E3 cable connections have been made from the terminating nodes to the cross-connect panel or equivalent connection points.

5

Determine the necessary add/drop and pass-through cross-connections for each node from the work instructions.

6

At the terminating nodes and pass-through nodes, select Configuration → Cross-Connections to access the Cross-Connection Wizard and establish the necessary cross-connections. Use the following reference as an example.

Reference:

Procedure 10-3: Establish cross-connections

7

Perform DS3/E3 end-to-end transmission test for each circuit being put into service, as required.

Reference:

Procedure 14-8: Perform DS1/E1/DS3/E3 transmission test

8

Important!

At the terminating nodes, select View → Equipment to access the required DS3/E3 ports and verify the value of the Port Monitoring Mode parameter.

If required, select Configuration → Equipment to access DS3/E3 ports and change the value of the Port Monitoring Mode parameter.

9

Important!

If the Tributary Monitoring Mode is provisioned NMON, the tributary is not monitored/alarmed and the tributary will not automatically transition to the IS (in-service) state when a good signal (not UNEQ, AIS, LOP, SF) is detected. If the Tributary Monitoring Mode is provisioned AUTO, the tributary automatically transitions to the IS (in-service) state when a good signal (not UNEQ, AIS, LOP, SF) is detected, and the tributary is monitored/alarmed.

At the terminating nodes and pass-through nodes, select View → Equipment to access the required tributaries and verify the value of the Tributary Monitoring Mode parameter.

If required, select Configuration → Equipment to access tributaries and change the value of the Tributary Monitoring Mode parameter.
