PIM access and mLDP provider core

In NG-MVPN, multicast signaling is segmented between the access side (CE-PE) and the provider core (PE-PE).

Access side (CE to PE)

Customer Edge (CE) routers and Provider Edge (PE) routers use PIM-based multicast signaling. The PE learns which multicast streams (<S, G>, and <*, G> ) the customer intends to send or receive. The provider core remains completely unaware of these specific customer PIM states.

Provider core (PE to PE)

Instead of replicating customer traffic, the ingress PE encapsulates the multicast packets in a PMSI (Provider Multicast Service Interface) tunnel. The provider core can use one of the following as the PMSI tunnel type:

  • PIM ASM
  • PIM SSM
  • mLDP
  • RSVP-TE P2MP
  • BIER
  • SR-P2MP
Note:

For NG-MVPN services, mLDP (Multicast LDP) is the only supported PMSI provider tunnel type; SR Linux does not support other PMSI provider tunnel types.
