Procedure 12-21: Suspend non-VLF OC-48 UPSR to VLF OC-192 UPSR upgrade

- Overview
DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

If a node has been taken out of the Ring Upgrade Mode, the node cannot be returned to the original pre-upgrade state without affecting service.

All nodes in the ring must be in the provisioned Ring Upgrade Mode.

Use this procedure to temporarily suspend a non-VLF OC-48 UPSR to VLF OC-192 UPSR upgrade.

Suspending an upgrade in progress temporarily stops the upgrade.

To return all nodes in the ring to their pre-upgrade state, refer to Procedure 12-20: Back out non-VLF OC-48 UPSR to VLF OC-192 UPSR upgrade.

When the ring upgrade is temporarily suspended before completion, some spans are operating at the OC-48 line rate and some at the OC-192 line rate. This requires two nodes that are equipped with an OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in one Main slot and an OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in the other Main slot. These nodes are the starting node and the last node upgraded.

To continue to operate temporarily with different circuit packs in the Main slots, the starting node and the nodes that have been upgraded must remain in the Ring Upgrade Mode.

Important!

Transmission hits will occur during this procedure whenever an OLIU circuit pack with a different line rate is installed or removed from a Main slot. The transmission hit is a result of an internal system timing adjustment to accommodate different line rates in the two Main slots.

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

The following equipment is required to perform this procedure:

  • Wrist strap

  • One original or temporary replacement LNW27 (Series 1:6 and later), LNW29 (Series 1:6 and later), LNW32, LNW76 (Series 1:6 and later), LNW202, and/or LNW221–259 (Series 1:6 and later) OC-48 OLIU circuit pack is required for Main slot M2.

  • One temporary replacement non-VLF LNW56, LNW57, LNW58, LNW502, or LNW555 OC-192 OLIU circuit pack is required for Main slot M1.

The temporary replacement circuit packs must have compatible optics. For example, do not replace a circuit pack that has long reach optics with a circuit pack that has intermediate reach optics. Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-300 for the SONET optical specifications of the OC-48 and OC-192 OLIU circuit packs.

DANGER

NOTICE

Equipment damage hazard

Rocking circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them can damage circuit pack and/or shelf connectors.

Do not rock circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them. Carefully slide circuit packs into or out of the shelf slot.

DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

Removing or installing circuit packs during a System Reset can cause system errors.

Do not remove or install a circuit pack during a System Reset. If a System Reset occurs, wait until the System Reset is complete, then remove or install the circuit pack.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge information in Chapter 1, Safety.

  2. Review the applicable Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) Software Release Description for any detailed procedures or cautions that may apply to this suspend procedure.

Steps

Important!

This procedure starts at the last node upgraded.

When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS, section DCC channel failed, and neighbor SYSCTL CP unavailable alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.

Complete the following steps to temporarily suspend a non-VLF OC-48 UPSR to VLF OC-192 UPSR upgrade.

1

Identify the last node that was upgraded.

If...

Then log in to the...

both Main slots have been upgraded,

last node upgraded (refer to the UPSR example at the end of the procedure) and continue with Step 2.

Main slot M1 has been upgraded and Main slot M2 is equipped with an LNW27 (pre Series 1:6), LNW29 (pre Series 1:6), LNW76 (pre Series 1:6), and/or LNW221–259 (pre Series 1:6) OC-48 OLIU circuit pack

2

Important!

Both Main slots have been upgraded. All traffic is now active on Main slot M1, and the system is reporting an inc. OC192 LOS alarm for Main slot M2.

Local operating procedures for removing a circuit pack may vary. One method is to disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack. Another method is to verify the circuit pack active/standby status, perform manual switches if the circuit pack is active, and then disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack.

Determine the local operating procedures for removing a circuit pack before removing the VLF OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2.

If the local operating procedures specify…

Then...

disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack,

Proceed to Step 6.

verify the circuit pack active/standby status, perform manual switches if the circuit pack is active, and then disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack,

Continue with Step 3.

3

Important!

This step is optional. If the VLF OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 is the active circuit pack for timing and the circuit pack is removed, the system performs an automatic protection switch and subsequent transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur. If desired, perform this step to determine the timing state of the VLF OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2.

Select View → Timing/Sync. Observe the value of the Active Circuit Pack parameter to determine the active circuit pack for timing. Click Close.

4

Important!

This step is optional. If the VLF OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 is the active circuit pack for timing, an optional manual timing switch can be performed before replacing the circuit pack in Main slot M2. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch.

If the VLF OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 is the active circuit pack for timing, do not perform this step.

To perform an optional manual timing switch, select Fault → Timing/Sync Protection Switch → Main Circuit Pack Timing Switch. Select the Manual Switch Command and click OK.

Result:

A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes.

5

If required, repeat Step 3 to verify that the circuit pack in Main slot M1 is now the active circuit pack for timing.

6

Open the lower faceplate latch on the VLF OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Disconnect the optical fibers from the VLF OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2.

If Main slot M2 was originally equipped with...

Then replace the VLF OC-192 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 with...

LNW27 (pre Series 1:6), LNW29 (pre Series 1:6), LNW76 (pre Series 1:6), or LNW221–259 (pre Series 1:6) OC-48 OLIUs,

the temporary replacement non-VLF OC-48 OLIU circuit pack.

LNW27 (Series 1:6 and later), LNW29 (Series 1:6 and later), LNW32, LNW76 (Series 1:6 and later), LNW202, or LNW221–259 (Series 1:6 and later) OC-48 OLIUs,
