Procedure 12-4.1: Upgrade low-speed OC-12 UPSR connections at node with single-rate circuit packs

Important!

This is not a stand-alone procedure. Perform this procedure only as directed by another procedure.

When upgrading connections to a UPSR using a port pair on single-rate circuit packs in the Function/Growth slots, the node is not required to be in the provisioned Ring Upgrade Mode.

Steps

Important!

When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS, section DCC channel failed, and neighbor SYSCTL CP unavailable alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.

Complete the following steps to upgrade the in-service UPSR connections at a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node connected to the UPSR using a port pair on single-rate circuit packs in the Function/Growth slots.

1

Important!

If the provisioned Timing Mode is Line and the Optical Synchronization Source is either of the OC-12 ports that are to be upgraded, the Optical Synchronization Source must be reprovisioned to an upgrade OC-48 port or to a different OC-n port not involved in the upgrade.

Select View → Timing/Sync to access the System Timing parameters and observe the provisioned Timing Mode and Optical Synchronization Source. Click Close.

If required, use local operating procedures to determine which OC-n line to provision as the new Optical Synchronization Source.

2

Important!

Perform this step only if the Optical Synchronization Source is to be reprovisioned to a different OC-n port not involved in the upgrade.

If the Optical Synchronization Source is to be reprovisioned to an upgrade OC-48 port, the Optical Synchronization Source is reprovisioned later in this procedure only after transmission is supported on the upgrade OC-48 span.

If required, select Configuration → Timing/Sync to reprovision the Optical Synchronization Source to a different OC-n port not involved in the upgrade.

Procedure 6-5: Network Element synchronization provisioning

3

Important!

An OC-48 port pair must be available in a different Function/Growth group.

To verify that the upgrade OC-48 port parameters are provisioned correctly, select View → Equipment and expand the required circuit pack. Click on the original port and Select to obtain the port parameters. Click Close.

If required, provision the upgrade OC-48 port pair according to the work instructions using the Configuration → Equipment command.

Procedure 4-4: Provision OLIU circuit packs/ports for service

4

To verify that the upgrade OC-48 port DCC parameters are provisioned correctly, select View → DCC Terminations to obtain the DCC channel status. Click Close.

If required, provision the upgrade OC-48 port DCC parameters according to the office records using the Configuration → DCC Terminations command.

Reference:

Procedure 6-4: Provision DCC terminations

5

Important!

All cross-connections at this node that are associated with the existing OC-12 UPSR must be identified so that traffic can be moved to the OC-48 UPSR.

Select View → Cross-Connections. Expand the required OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in slot 1 of the Function/Growth group that is currently connected to the OC-12 UPSR. Click on the required OC-12 port and Select to obtain the current list of cross-connections. Identify and record all through, add, drop, and UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connections. Click Close to exit.

Important!

A UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection consists of a 1-way add, a 1-way through, and a 1-way path protected drop cross-connection. To verify that a cross-connection leg is part of a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection, click on the cross-connection leg in the list of cross-connections and click View Graphic.

For additional information about UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connections, refer to Procedure 10-11: Establish dual ring interworking (DRI) connections.

6

For each UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection identified in Step 5, select Configuration → Cross-Connections and use the Cross-Connection Wizard to delete the UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connections. Then use the Cross-Connection Wizard to create the same UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connections on the required OC-48 port pair in the other Function/Growth group.

Result:

Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) may occur. Alarms may be reported at other nodes in the ring.

Procedure 10-11: Establish dual ring interworking (DRI) connections

7

Important!

Do not perform this step for a 1-way through cross-connection associated with a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection.

For each through cross-connection identified in Step 5 that is not part of a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection, select Configuration → Cross-Connections and use the Cross-Connection Wizard to create the same through cross-connections on the required OC-48 port pair in the other Function/Growth group.

DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

Removal of wrong fiber connections will result in a service interruption.

Ensure that you remove only the fiber connections for the optical span being upgraded.

Disconnect the transmit and receive optical fibers from the required OC-12 port on the OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in slot 1 of the Function/Growth group.

Result:

The system reports an inc. OC12 LOS alarm for the OC-12 port.

9

If required at both ends of the optical span to be upgraded, perform the following to connect the OC-48 port on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in slot 1 of the other Function/Growth group and the required OC-48 circuit pack/port at the opposite end of the upgraded OC-48 optical span:

  1. Clean and connect the transmit optical fibers.

  2. Measure the optical receive power of the receive fibers using an optical power meter. Select the appropriate LBO to attenuate the receive signal to the middle of the allowable optical receive power range. (Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-324 for the SONET optical specifications of the OC-48 circuit packs.)

  3. Clean and connect the receive fibers.

Procedure 14-4: Perform connection and verification of optical facility

10

Important!

Perform this step only if the Optical Synchronization Source is to be reprovisioned to the upgrade OC-48 port on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in slot 1 of the Function/Growth group.

If required, select Configuration → Timing/Sync to reprovision the Optical Synchronization Source to the upgrade OC-48 port on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in slot 1 of the Function/Growth group.

Reference:

Procedure 6-5: Network Element synchronization provisioning

11

Important!

Perform this step only if the opposite end of the upgraded optical span is an OC-48 port in a Function/Growth group and the Optical Synchronization Source is to be reprovisioned to the upgrade OC-48 port.

If required at the opposite end of the upgraded optical span, select Configuration → Timing/Sync to reprovision the Optical Synchronization Source to the upgrade OC-48 port on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in slot 2 of the Function/Growth group.

Reference:

Procedure 6-5: Network Element synchronization provisioning

12

Important!

Do not perform this step for a 1-way add cross-connection associated with a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection.

For each add cross-connection identified in Step 5 that is not part of a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection, select Configuration → Cross-Connections and use the Cross-Connection Wizard to bridge the add cross-connections to the required OC-48 port on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in slot 1 of the other Function/Growth group.

Reference:

Procedure 10-10: Bridge and roll cross-connections

13

Important!

Do not perform this step for a 1-way path protected drop cross-connection associated with a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection.

For each drop cross-connection identified in Step 5 that is not part of a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection, select Configuration → Cross-Connections and use the Cross-Connection Wizard to roll the drop cross-connections to the required OC-48 port on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in slot 1 of the other Function/Growth group.
