Procedure 12-6: Suspend OC-12 UPSR to OC-48 UPSR upgrade

- Overview
DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

If a node has been taken out of the Ring Upgrade Mode, the node cannot be returned to the original pre-upgrade state without affecting service.

All nodes connected to the UPSR using the Main slots must be in the provisioned Ring Upgrade Mode.

Important!

This procedure starts at the last node upgraded. The last node upgraded must be connected to the UPSR using the Main slots. Suspending an upgrade at a node connected to the UPSR using port pairs in the Function/Growth slots is not supported.

This procedure assumes that the last node upgraded is a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend. However, the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX can also be connected to a UPSR using the Main slots. If the upgrade is suspended at a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX node, refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) User Operations Guide, 365-372-301, Procedure 12-7: Suspend OC-12 UPSR to OC-48 UPSR upgrade.

Use this procedure to temporarily suspend an OC-12 UPSR to OC-48 UPSR upgrade at a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node connected to the UPSR using single-rate circuit packs.

To temporarily stop the upgrade at a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node connected to the UPSR using multirate circuit packs in the Main/Function/Growth slots, refer to Procedure 12-27: Suspend UPSR/1+1 upgrade at node (multirate circuit packs).

Suspending an upgrade in progress temporarily stops the upgrade.

To return all nodes in the ring to their pre-upgrade state, refer to Procedure 12-5: Back out OC-12 UPSR to OC-48 UPSR upgrade.

When the ring upgrade is temporarily suspended before completion, some spans are operating at the OC-12 line rate and some at the OC-48 line rate. This requires two nodes that are equipped with an OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in one Main slot and an OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in the other Main slot. These nodes are the starting node and the last node upgraded. These nodes must be connected to the UPSR using the Main slots. Suspending an upgrade at a node connected to the UPSR using port pairs in the Function/Growth slots is not supported.

To continue to operate temporarily with different circuit packs in the Main slots, the starting node and the nodes that have been upgraded must remain in the Ring Upgrade Mode.

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

2

Important!

Both Main slots have been upgraded, and the Configuration → Update System → Upgrade command has been performed. All traffic is now active on Main slot M1, and the system is reporting an inc. OC48 LOS alarm for Main slot M2.

Local operating procedures for removing a circuit pack may vary. One method is to disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack. Another method is to verify the circuit pack active/standby status, perform manual switches if the circuit pack is active, and then disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack.

Determine the local operating procedures for removing a circuit pack before removing the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2.

If the local operating procedures specify…

Then...

disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack,

Proceed to Step 6.

verify the circuit pack active/standby status, perform manual switches if the circuit pack is active, and then disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack,

Continue with Step 3.

3

Important!

This step is optional. If the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 is the active circuit pack for timing and the circuit pack is removed, the system performs an automatic protection switch and subsequent transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur. If desired, perform this step to determine the timing state of the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2.

Select View → Timing/Sync. Observe the value of the Active Circuit Pack parameter to determine the active circuit pack for timing. Click Close.

4

Important!

This step is optional. If the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 is the active circuit pack for timing, an optional manual timing switch can be performed before replacing the circuit pack in Main slot M2. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch.

If the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 is the active circuit pack for timing, do not perform this step.

To perform an optional manual timing switch, select Fault → Timing/Sync Protection Switch → Main Circuit Pack Timing Switch. Select the Manual Switch Command and click OK.

Result:

A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes.

5

If required, repeat Step 3 to verify that the circuit pack in Main slot M1 is now the active circuit pack for timing.

6

Open the faceplate latch on the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Then replace the OC-48 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 with the original OC-12 OLIU circuit pack.

Result:

The inc. OC48 LOS alarm for Main slot M2 clears, and system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2.
