Procedure 12-2.1: Back out high-speed OC-3 UPSR to OC-12 UPSR upgrade at node with single-rate circuit packs

Important!

This is not a stand-alone procedure. Perform this procedure only as directed by another procedure.

Steps

Important!

When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS, section DCC channel failed, and neighbor SYSCTL CP unavailable alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.

Complete the following steps to back out an OC-3 UPSR to OC-12 UPSR upgrade at a Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node connected to the UPSR using single-rate circuit packs in the Main slots.

1

Determine the current status of the upgrade at the node.

If...

Then...

both Main slots have been upgraded with OC-12 OLIU circuit packs,

Continue with Step 2.

only Main slot M1 has been upgraded with an OC-12 OLIU circuit pack,

Proceed to Step 7.

2

If required, verify the active/standby status of the OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

Reference:

Procedure 12-2.3: Verify active/standby status of circuit pack/port to be backed out

3

Important!

This step may be performed if the Main and Function A/B slots were originally equipped with LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit packs.

If required, verify the active/standby status of the DS1 circuit pack in Function slot A2/B2 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

Reference:

Procedure 12-2.4: Verify active/standby status of DS1 circuit pack to be backed out

4

Important!

If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch.

Open the faceplate latch on the OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2.

If Main slot M2 was originally equipped with an...

Then...

LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack,

Perform the following:

  1. Remove the OC-12 circuit pack from Main slot M2.

  2. Remove the DS1 circuit pack from Function slot A2/B2.

  3. Remove the center divider between the M2 and A2/B2 sections of the slot.

  4. Install the original LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack in Main slot M2 and Function slot A2/B2.

Result:

The original LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack in Main slot M2 and Function slot A2/B2 is tested and autoprovisioned.

The system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2 and Function slot A2/B2. The system also reports an inc. OC12 LOS alarm for Main slot M2.

LNW40, LNW302, or LNW601 OC-3 circuit pack,

Replace the OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 with the original OC-3 OLIU circuit pack.

Result:

The original OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M2 is tested and autoprovisioned.

The system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition and an inc. OC12 LOS alarm for Main slot M2.

Reference:

Procedure 4-2: Install OLIU circuit packs in Main slots

5

If required at both ends of the optical span to be backed out, perform the following to connect original OC-3 circuit pack in Main slot M2 and the required OC-3 circuit pack/port at the opposite end of the original OC-3 optical span:

  1. Clean and connect the transmit optical fibers.

  2. Measure the optical receive power of the receive fibers using an optical power meter. Select the appropriate LBO to attenuate the receive signal to the middle of the allowable optical receive power range. (Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-324 for the SONET optical specifications of the OC-3 circuit packs.)

  3. Clean and connect the receive fibers.

Result:

The inc. OC12 LOS alarms clear. Transmission is now supported on the original OC-3 optical span.

Procedure 14-4: Perform connection and verification of optical facility

6

Important!

Perform this step only if the opposite end of the original optical span is an OC-3 port in a Function/Growth group and the Optical Synchronization Source is to be reprovisioned to the original OC-3 port.

If required at the opposite end of the original optical span, select Configuration → Timing/Sync to reprovision the Optical Synchronization Source to the original OC-3 port on the OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in slot 1 of the Function/Growth group.

Procedure 6-5: Network Element synchronization provisioning

7

Important!

The UPD/INIT button does not work during this upgrade.

At the System View select Configuration → Update System → Upgrade. Select main-2 as the Directed Slot Choice and click OK.

Result:

A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes.

If Main slot M2 is equipped with an...

Then...

LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack,

The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2 and Function slot A2/B2 clears, and the system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M1 and Function slot A1/B1.

LNW40, LNW302, or LNW601 OC-3 circuit pack,

The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M2 clears, and the system reports an unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M1.

8

If required, verify the active/standby status of the OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

Reference:

Procedure 12-2.3: Verify active/standby status of circuit pack/port to be backed out

9

Important!

This step may be performed if the Main and Function A/B slots were originally equipped with LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit packs.

If required, verify the active/standby status of the DS1 circuit pack in Function slot A1/B1 and perform manual switches to switch traffic away from an active circuit pack.

Reference:

Procedure 12-2.4: Verify active/standby status of DS1 circuit pack to be backed out

10

Important!

Do not reconnect the optical fibers until instructed to do so. The optical fibers are reconnected after the OC-12 circuit pack/port is backed out at each end of the optical span.

If the circuit pack is active for timing and/or transmission, opening the latch causes timing and/or transmission switches. Transmission hits (less than 60 ms) will occur for each separate protection switch.

Open the faceplate latch on the OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Disconnect the optical fibers from the OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1.

If Main slot M1 was originally equipped with an...

Then...

LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack,

Perform the following:

  1. Remove the OC-12 circuit pack from Main slot M1.

  2. Remove the DS1 circuit pack from Function slot A1/B1.

  3. Remove the center divider between the M1 and A1/B1 sections of the slot.

  4. Install the original LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack in Main slot M1 and Function slot A1/B1.

Result:

The original LNW140 OC-3/DS1 circuit pack in Main slot M1 and Function slot A1/B1 is tested and autoprovisioned.

The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M1 and Function slot A1/B1 clears, and the system reports an inc. OC3 LOS alarm for Main slot M1. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes in the ring.

LNW40, LNW302, or LNW601 OC-3 circuit pack,

Replace the OC-12 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 with the original OC-3 OLIU circuit pack.

Result:

The original OC-3 OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 is tested and autoprovisioned.

The unexpected circuit pack type condition for Main slot M1 clears, and the system reports an inc. OC3 LOS alarm for Main slot M1. Alarms may also be reported at other nodes in the ring.
