Procedure 2-3: Initial software generic installation using FTP

- Overview

Use this procedure to install software generic in a factory-fresh VLNC2 SYSCTL using FTP. A factory-fresh SYSCTL circuit pack does not contain a software generic; it only contains pack information and the boot code that enables a software generic to be downloaded.

Important!

You must have direct TCP/IP connectivity to your NE using LAN-1 and you must know the IP address of your FTP server. (The WaveStar® CIT may be the FTP server.)

Important!

Initial software download using FTAM is the simplest method available.

To install the software generic using FTAM , refer to Procedure 2-1: Initial software generic installation using FTAM.

To install the software generic using FTTD, refer to Procedure 2-2: Initial software generic installation using FTAM-FTP gateway (FTTD).

- Privilege level

You must login as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

In addition to Required equipment listed in this chapter, the following equipment is also required:

  • CAT5 Ethernet cable with either a 10/100 hub or a cross-over cable for the LAN port.

  • Factory-fresh VLNC2 system controller (SYSCTL)

  • Copy of the new system generic software program on CD-ROM or FTP server.

  • Current Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Release 7.2.X Customer Release Notes for the software generic being installed.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin in this chapter and Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  2. Verify that new software generic program is available.

  3. Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Release 7.2.X Customer Release Notes for a description of any special considerations required when installing this version of software.

  4. Unseat all circuit packs in the shelf, except the SYSCTL to which you are downloading the new software generic.

  5. If the WaveStar® CIT is the FTP server, determine the IP address assigned to your PC LAN card that will be used to connect to the shelf.

Step

Complete the following steps to install the software generic program using FTP in a new shelf installation with only a factory-fresh VLNC2 SYSCTL installed.

1

Verify that only a factory-fresh VLNC2 SYSCTL is installed in your Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf; no other circuit packs should be seated in the shelf.

Important!

A factory-fresh SYSCTL circuit pack does not contain a software generic; it only contains pack information and the boot code that enables a software generic to be downloaded.

2

Connect the cross-over cable from the PC's Network Interface Card (NIC) to the LAN port on the SYSCTL circuit pack faceplate and establish a WaveStar® CIT session.

Result:

The Network View appears.

If the port appears with information already populated, then changing the existing provisioning will cause the system to reset. If the shelf resets, log into the shelf again and continue through the wizard.

9

You will see the IP Address and IP Subnet Mask field populated with the defaults illustrated in Screen 2.

Important!

If TCP/IP Control is enabled, changing an existing IP Address or an existing IP Subnet Mask will cause the shelf to reset, even if the existing values are the default IP address (169.254.1.1) and subnet mask (255.255.0.0).

Click Next.

Note:

LAN-1 is the LAN port on the faceplate of the SYSCTL circuit pack.

Result:

Screen 3 appears.

If the WaveStar® CIT or your PC is your FTP server and you do not know the IP address:

  1. Select Run from the Windows Start menu.

  2. Type cmd and click OK.

  3. Type ipconfig in the resulting command prompt.

  4. If there is more than one IP address, determine which connection is used to connect to the NE and record the appropriate IP address.

10

Follow the directions on Screen 3 to provision the information for your FTP server.

If there is existing FTP profile:

  1. Select an existing FTP server from the Profile pull-down menu.

The IP addresses of your FTP server and the LAN port you provisioned on Screen 2 must be in the same subnet, even if you are using the default IP address (169.254.1.1) and subnet mask (255.255.0.0).

Entries to the Profile pull-down menu may be changed using the Modify, Apply, and Save buttons or removed using the Delete button.

  2. In the Directory Path panel, enter the current location of the generic to be downloaded in the Path field or use the Browse button (if available) to select the generic.

The value of the Path field can be either an absolute path or a relative path that is relative to the FTP server root directory.
    • The absolute path must start with the drive name followed by a colon (:) then the path names; for example: C:/Program Files/Alcatel-Lucent/WaveStar CIT/generics/1850TSS-5/7.2.2/p. If you had an older version of the WaveStar® CIT installed prior to installing the current WaveStar®, your path could start with C:/Program Files/Lucent Technologies/WaveStar CIT/.
