Procedure 12-13: Back out cross connect capacity upgrade of high-speed OLIU circuit packs

- Overview

Important!

Do not use this procedure to downgrade a node if the upgrade has been completed and additional cross-connections have been provisioned (and even subsequently deleted). The system will not recognize the original OLIU circuit pack as an allowable type.

Use this procedure to back out of an in-service cross connect capacity upgrade of high-speed OLIU circuit packs (in progress) at a node in a 1+1/UPSR network.

Backing out of an upgrade in progress returns the node to the pre-upgrade state.

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

The following equipment is required to perform this procedure:

  • Optical power meter

  • Wrist strap

  • Original OLIU circuit packs and LBOs for the node to be backed out

NOTICE

Equipment damage

Rocking circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them can damage circuit pack and/or shelf connectors.

Do not rock circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them. Carefully slide circuit packs into or out of the shelf slot.

DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

Removing or installing circuit packs during a System Reset can cause system errors.

Do not remove or install a circuit pack during a System Reset. If a System Reset occurs, wait until the System Reset is complete, then remove or install the circuit pack.

DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

Transmission hits (up to 100 ms) may occur as traffic is switched.

The length of the service hits varies based on shelf equipage and TDM service provisioning.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge information in Chapter 1, Safety.

  2. Review the applicable Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Software Release Description for any detailed procedures or cautions that may apply to this backout procedure.

  3. Determine the local operating procedures for removing a circuit pack. Local operating procedures for removing a circuit pack may vary. One method is to disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack. Another method is to verify the circuit pack active/standby status, perform manual switches if the circuit pack is active, and then disconnect the optical fibers and remove the circuit pack.

Steps

Important!

When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS, section DCC channel failed, and neighbor SYSCTL CP unavailable alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.

Complete the following steps to back out of an in-service cross connect capacity upgrade of high-speed OLIU circuit packs (in progress) at a node in a 1+1/UPSR network.

1

Determine the status of the in-service high-speed OLIU circuit pack upgrade.

If...

Then...

original OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 has been replaced and the Configuration → Update System → Upgrade command has not been performed,

Continue with Step 2.

Proceed to Step 13.

2

Important!

The original OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 has been replaced and the Configuration → Update System → Upgrade command has not been performed. The system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M1.

If an LNW111/LNW112/LNW39/LNW391 circuit pack has been simultaneously upgraded, the system also reports an unexpected CP type alarm for slot A1/B1.

Open the faceplate latch on the replacement OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1. Disconnect the optical fibers and remove the replacement OLIU circuit pack from Main slot M1.

Result:

The unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M1 clears, and the system reports a CP removed alarm for Main slot M1.

If an LNW111/LNW112/LNW39/LNW391 circuit pack has been simultaneously upgraded, the unexpected CP type alarm for slot A1/B1 clears, and the system reports a CP removed alarm for slot A1/B1.

Reference:

Procedure 4-2: Install OLIU circuit packs in Main slots

6

Obtain the original LBO, clean all fiber connectors, and connect the transmit and receive optical fibers to the original OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1.

Result:

All alarms clear and service is restored. This applies to the local node and the adjacent node connected to the circuit pack in Main slot M1.

DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

Transmission hits (up to 100 ms) may occur as traffic is switched.

The length of the service hits varies based on shelf equipage and TDM service provisioning.

Important!

The original OLIU circuit pack in Main slot M1 has been replaced and the Configuration → Update System → Upgrade command has been performed. The replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module in Main slot M1 has been autoprovisioned, and the system has performed automatic protection switches. All traffic is now active on the replacement OLIU circuit pack/pluggable transmission module in Main slot M1.

The system reports an unexpected CP type alarm for Main slot M2.

If an LNW111/LNW112/LNW39/LNW391 circuit pack has been simultaneously upgraded, the system also reports an unexpected CP type alarm for slot A2/B2.

The UPD/INIT button does not work during this procedure.

At the System View select Configuration → Update System → Upgrade. Select main-2 as the Directed Slot Choice and click OK.
