Procedure 12-10: Upgrade low-speed OLIU circuit packs (different slots)

- Overview

Use this procedure to perform the following in-service, different-slot, low-speed OLIU circuit pack upgrades:

  • low-density 4-port LNW36/LNW37 OC-3 OLIU to high-density 8-port LNW45 OC-3 OLIU

  • LNW36/LNW37/LNW45 OC-3 OLIU to 12-port LNW55 OC3/OC12/OC48 OLIU

  • low-density 2-port LNW46 OC-12 OLIU to high-density 4-port LNW49 OC-12 OLIU

  • LNW46/LNW49 OC-12 OLIU to 12-port LNW55 OC3/OC12/OC48 OLIU

  • LNW31 OC-48 OLIU to 12-port LNW55 OC3/OC12/OC48 OLIU

Traffic is bridged/rolled from the original OLIU circuit pack to the replacement circuit pack one port (unprotected applications) or port pair (protected applications) at a time.

Important!

If upgrading to LNW55 OLIU circuit packs, the Main slots must be equipped with Very Large Fabric LNW84 or LNW141 OLIU circuit packs. If the Main slots are not equipped with Very Large Fabric OLIU circuit packs, the system reports a CP not allowed - eqpt alarm.

Important!

This is an out-of-slot upgrade at a node. An empty Function/Growth slot is required to upgrade an unprotected OLIU circuit pack. An empty Function/Growth group is required to upgrade protected OLIU circuit packs.

To perform an in-service, same-slot, low-speed OLIU circuit pack upgrade, refer to Procedure 12-11: Upgrade low-speed OLIU circuit packs (same slots).

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

The following equipment is required to perform this procedure:

  • Wrist strap

  • For unprotected applications, one replacement low-speed OLIU circuit pack and pluggable transmission modules.

  • For protected applications, two replacement low-speed OLIU circuit pack and pluggable transmission modules.

The pluggable transmission modules installed in the original OLIU circuit packs may be reused in the replacement OLIU circuit packs.

NOTICE

Equipment damage

Rocking circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them can damage circuit pack and/or shelf connectors.

Do not rock circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them. Carefully slide circuit packs into or out of the shelf slot.

DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

Removing or installing circuit packs during a System Reset can cause system errors.

Do not remove or install a circuit pack during a System Reset. If a System Reset occurs, wait until the System Reset is complete, then remove or install the circuit pack.

DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

If upgrading from LNW36 OC-3 to LNW45 OC-3 OLIU circuit packs or from LNW46 OC-12 to LNW49 OC-12 OLIU circuit packs, transmission hits (up to 300 ms) may occur as traffic is switched.

If the OLIU circuit packs being upgraded carry Ethernet traffic, transmission hits occur as Ethernet traffic is rolled to the new slot. The length of transmission hits increase with the number of tributaries that need to be rolled to the new slot and could be several seconds long.

The length of the service hits varies based on shelf equipage and TDM/Ethernet service provisioning.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  2. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure.

  3. Ensure that the required replacement OLIU circuit packs and pluggable transmission modules are available for installation.

  4. Verify that the work instructions specify the affected circuit pack and protection group AIDs (if required).

  5. Verify that the work instructions specify the circuit pack/pluggable transmission module/port parameters and values to be provisioned.

  6. Review the applicable Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Software Release Description for any detailed procedures or cautions that may apply to this upgrade procedure.

Steps

Important!

When optical fibers are disconnected during this procedure, inc. LOS, section DCC channel failed, and neighbor SYSCTL CP unavailable alarms are reported. The holdover mode active condition may also be reported depending on the provisioned system timing mode.

Complete the following steps to upgrade low-speed OLIU circuit packs using different slots.

1

Install the required replacement OLIU circuit packs and pluggable transmission modules.

Important!

The pluggable transmission modules installed in the original OLIU circuit packs may be moved to the replacement OLIU circuit packs later in this procedure when the optical fibers are moved.

Reference:

Procedure 4-3: Install OLIU circuit packs in Function slots

2

Using the work instructions, select Configuration → Equipment to access the replacement OLIU circuit packs and provision the required parameters for the circuit packs and each pluggable transmission module/port.

Reference:

Procedure 4-4: Provision OLIU circuit packs/ports for service

3

Using the work instructions, select Configuration → DCC Terminations to access and provision each DCC port on the replacement OLIU circuit packs.

Reference:

Procedure 6-4: Provision DCC terminations

4

Important!

If the provisioned Timing Mode is Line and the Optical Synchronization Source is an optical port on the OLIU circuit pack that is to be upgraded, the Optical Synchronization Source must be reprovisioned to an optical port on the replacement OLIU circuit pack or to a different optical port not involved in the upgrade.

Select View → Timing/Sync to access the System Timing parameters and observe the provisioned Timing Mode and Optical Synchronization Source. Click Close.

If required, use local operating procedures to determine which optical port to provision as the new Optical Synchronization Source.

5

Important!

Perform this step only if the Optical Synchronization Source is to be reprovisioned to a different optical port not involved in the upgrade.

If the Optical Synchronization Source is to be reprovisioned to an optical port on the replacement OLIU circuit pack, the Optical Synchronization Source is reprovisioned later in this procedure only after transmission is supported on the replacement OLIU circuit pack.

If required, select Configuration → Timing/Sync to reprovision the Optical Synchronization Source to a different optical port not involved in the upgrade.

Reference:

Procedure 6-5: Network Element synchronization provisioning

6

Important!

Traffic is moved from the original OLIU circuit pack to the replacement circuit pack one port (unprotected applications) or port pair (protected applications) at a time.

Using local procedures, determine the first port/port pair to be moved to the replacement OLIU circuit pack.

7

Important!

All cross-connections that are associated with the OLIU circuit packs that are to be upgraded must be identified so that traffic can be moved to the replacement OLIU circuit packs.

Select View → Cross-Connections to access the OLIU circuit pack/port and obtain the current list of cross-connections for the port/port pair being moved. Identify and record all through, add, drop, and UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connections. Click Close to exit.

Important!

A UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection consists of a 1-way add, a 1-way through, and a 1-way path protected drop cross-connection. To verify that a cross-connection leg is part of a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection, click on the cross-connection leg in the list of cross-connections and click View Graphic.

For additional information about UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connections, refer to Procedure 10-11: Establish dual ring interworking (DRI) connections.

Add cross-connections allow traffic to be added to tributaries on the optical port being upgraded.

Drop cross-connections allow traffic to be dropped from tributaries on the optical port being upgraded.

8

Important!

If required by local procedures, manual protection switches may be performed at the terminating drop nodes and the other drop/continue node to switch Dual Ring Interworking traffic away from the node being upgraded.

If required, use circuit layouts and follow local procedures to identify the terminating nodes and the other drop/continue node for each UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection identified in Step 7. Select Reports → Path Protection List to verify the active/standby status of the required paths.

If required at each terminating node and the other drop/continue node, select Fault → Protection Switch to access the required paths and perform a Manual switch to switch Dual Ring Interworking traffic away from the node being upgraded.

9

For each UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection identified in Step 7, select Configuration → Cross-Connections and use the Cross-Connection Wizard to delete the UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connections. Then use the Cross-Connection Wizard to create the same UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connections on the replacement OLIU circuit packs.

Result:

Alarms may be reported at other nodes in the network.

Reference:

Procedure 10-11: Establish dual ring interworking (DRI) connections

10

Important!

Do not perform this step for a 1-way through cross-connection associated with a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection.

For each through cross-connection identified in Step 7 that is not part of a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection, select Configuration → Cross-Connections and use the Cross-Connection Wizard to create the same through cross-connections on the replacement OLIU circuit packs.

Reference:

Procedure 10-5: Make VT1.5 or STS-n cross-connections, single OC-3/OC-12 UPSR configuration

11

Important!

Do not perform this step for a 1-way add cross-connection associated with a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection.

For each add cross-connection identified in Step 7 that is not part of a UPSR Dual Ring Interworking cross-connection, select Configuration → Cross-Connections and use the Cross-Connection Wizard to bridge the add cross-connections to the required optical ports on the replacement OLIU circuit packs just installed.

Reference:

Procedure 10-10: Bridge and roll cross-connections

25

Select Configuration → Update System → Update All.

Result:

A dialog box appears asking you to confirm executing this command. Click Yes.

All alarms clear.

26

Important!

It is recommended that the network element database be backed up to a remote OS (for example, OMS) after an upgrade. This creates a current backup copy that includes the replacement circuit packs. The remote OS could use this backup copy to restore the network element database in the event of a catastrophic failure. Attempts to restore the network element database using a backup copy created prior to the upgrade may result in circuit pack failures.

Back up the network element database using the Configuration → Software → Remote Backup command.
