Notes:
  1. The circuit pack Slot Protection State parameter must be provisioned Protected. If a VLNC50/52/55 circuit pack is inserted in the Main 2 slot and the circuit pack Slot Protection State parameter is Unprotected, the system reports an unexpected CP type alarm. To change the circuit pack Slot Protection State parameter refer to Procedure 4-10: Change slot protection state.

  2. Any circuit pack that is otherwise allowed in this slot is allowed next to the VLNC64 circuit pack.

  3. The VLNC64 circuit packs in Slot 1 and Slot 2 operate independently and are not equipment protected.

Privilege level

If installing a VLNC50/52/55 SONET/SDH Transport circuit pack, you must log in as a Privileged, General, Maintenance, or Reports Only user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

In addition to the equipment listed in Required equipment, if loopbacks are to be performed, the following equipment is also required:

  • Optical loopback cable

  • Optical fiber cleaning tools

Refer to the list of Class 1 SFP transceivers that are approved by Alcatel-Lucent in Procedure 4-3: Install pluggable transmission modules.

Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Installation and System Turn-Up Guide, as required, when removing and/or installing pluggable transmission modules.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  3. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure.

  4. If installing a VLNC50/52/55 circuit pack in the Main 2 slot, the circuit pack Slot Protection State parameter must be provisioned Protected.

  5. Obtain the circuit pack to be installed. If required, obtain a 199MN apparatus blank for an unused Main slot, a 199SC apparatus blank for an unused CTL slot, and a 199SC apparatus blank for an unused C slot.

Steps

Complete the following steps to install the required circuit pack in a supported Main slot.

1

Determine the Main slot being equipped with the required circuit pack.

Refer to Supported circuit pack configurations in the Main slots for more information about supported circuit pack configurations in the Main slots and compatible VLIU Interface Units.

2

Important!

Signal performance may be degraded and the fiber interface surfaces damaged if the connections and couplings are not cleaned properly.

Ensure all optical fiber connectors and couplings are properly cleaned.

Reference:

Procedure 14-3: Clean optical fibers, dual LC adapters and LC lightguide buildouts (LBOs)

3

Important!

Pluggable transmission modules are shipped with a dust cover installed into the optical ports to maintain cleanliness during storage and/or transportation. It is recommended that the dust cover be kept in place to maintain cleanliness until the optical fiber is connected. With proper care and handling, cleaning the pluggable transmission modules should not be necessary.

If required, clean the pluggable transmission modules.

Reference:

Procedure 14-19: Clean pluggable transmission module

4

Perform the following:

  1. Holding the circuit pack vertically, rotate the circuit pack 90 degrees to the right (clockwise). The faceplate LEDs should be on your right.

  2. Open the faceplate latch and seat the circuit pack in the required slot by applying steady pressure to the faceplate and latch assembly.

5

Secure the circuit pack in the shelf using the latch lever.

Then...

VLNC40/42/42B Ethernet Aggregator

VLNC60/61/62 Circuit Emulator

VLNC64 Circuit Emulation Mini-Hub

The circuit pack FAULT LED lights for approximately 30 seconds then goes off, indicating successful installation.

If the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf is equipped with a VLNC2 circuit pack, select View → Refresh System View and the circuit pack will appear in the WaveStar® CIT System View.

VLNC50/52/55 SONET/SDH Transport

The circuit pack FAULT LED lights for approximately 2 minutes then goes off, indicating successful installation.

The circuit pack appears in the WaveStar® CIT System View.

If responses are not correct, replace the circuit pack. Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Maintenance and Trouble-Clearing Guide.

6

If required, install pluggable transmission modules.

Reference:

Procedure 4-3: Install pluggable transmission modules

7

Important!

An apparatus blank must be installed in an unused Main, CTL, or C slot.

If required, install a 199MN apparatus blank in an unused Main slot, a 199SC apparatus blank in an unused CTL slot, and a 199SC apparatus blank in the C slot.

STOP! End of Procedure.

VLNC50/52/55 SONET/SDH Transport circuit pack and optical port testing is required,

Continue with Step 9.

VLNC50/52/55 SONET/SDH Transport circuit pack and optical port testing is not required,

Proceed to Step 10.

9

Test each optical port for proper operation.

  1. Select Configuration → DCC Terminations to access the first port and provision the Termination State as disabled to prevent DCC-related alarms. Click Apply and Close.

  2. Loop back the port to test port functionality. Refer to Procedure 14-6: Connect optical loopback.

  3. Remove the lightguide jumper used to loop back the port and the LBO, if required. Verify that the circuit pack FAULT LED and port LED associated with the pluggable transmission module start flashing. The MN/ABN LED on the SYSCTL circuit pack lights green.

  4. Click the Alarm List button to obtain the NE Alarm List and verify that the inc. LOS alarm is associated with the port being tested.

  5. If required, reinstall the dust cover into the port on the pluggable transmission module to maintain cleanliness.

  6. Select Configuration → Update System → Update All. Click Yes.

Repeat this step for all optical ports being tested.

10

From the System View window, click the Alarm List button to obtain the NE Alarm List. Verify that no alarms, protection switches, protection switch lockouts, and loopbacks are present for the ports on the circuit pack just installed.

Result:

No alarms should be present for the circuit packs just installed.

11

If required at this time, provision the VLNC50/52/55 circuit pack/socket/port parameters.
