Procedure 2-4: Initial software generic installation or download and upgrade using a serial connection

- Overview

Use this procedure to install the software generic using a serial connection in a factory-fresh SYSCTL. A factory-fresh SYSCTL circuit pack does not contain a software generic; it only contains pack information and the boot code that enables a software generic to be downloaded.

You may also use this procedure to download the software generic using a serial connection to the dormant area of a local Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf that is currently running Release 6.0.x or later.

Important!

Using the serial port to install/download software takes significantly longer than using a LAN port.

Important!

Initial software download using FTAM is the simplest method available.

To install the software generic using FTAM, refer to Procedure 2-1: Initial software generic installation using FTAM.

To install the software generic using FTTD, refer to Procedure 2-2: Initial software generic installation using FTAM-FTP gateway (FTTD).

To install the software generic using FTP, refer to Procedure 2-3: Initial software generic installation using FTP.

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

In addition to Required equipment listed in this chapter, a RS-232 cable with an RJ-45 connector on one end and a PC serial connector on the other (typically DB9) for the RS232 port is also required:

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin in this chapter and Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  2. Verify that new software generic program is available.

  3. Refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) Release 7.2.X Customer Release Notes for a description of any special considerations required when installing this version of software.

  4. Unseat all circuit packs in the shelf, except the SYSCTL to which you are downloading the new software generic.

Step

Complete the following steps to download the software generic to the network element using a serial connection.

1

Using the appropriate cable, connect COM1 or COM2 port of your PC to the RS232 serial port on the faceplate of the SYSCTL circuit pack.

Important!

DO NOT establish a WaveStar® CIT session.

2

Double-click on the 1850 TSS Family Software folder on your Desktop.

Result:

The 1850 TSS Family Software folder contains the short-cut icon for the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 software release to be installed. For example, the following figure shows the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 7.2.2 icon. Your software release may be different, for example, Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 7.2.3.

3

Double click on the short-cut icon for the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 software release to be installed (for example, 1850TSS-5 7.2.2) to launch the term.bat file in the .../WaveStar CIT/generics/1850TSS-5/7.2.2/p directory. The files in this directory are used for serial downloads of the software. (Your software release may be different.)

Follow the instructions on the subsequent screens.

Press Enter.

Result:

The following screen appears with the response /* SYSTEM TID: ALU-TSS-5 */.

ALU-TSS-5 is the default TID. Your TID may be different.

5

Press Enter and type ACT-USER:ALU-TSS-5:ALU01:CTAG::1850TSS-5;

If necessary, replace ALU-TSS-5 with your TID.

Result:

The following screen appears.

Type INS-PRGM:ALU-TSS-5::CTAG::,,:PGMTYPE=ALL;

If necessary, replace ALU-TSS-5 with your TID.

Result:

System returns CTAG COMPLD and initiates the software download. While INS-PRGM is in progress, the green ACO/TST LED on the SYSCTL is lighted.

The software download takes approximately 60 minutes. If this is an initial installation (factory-fresh SYSCTL), the download will be followed by an automatic apply (10 minutes).

7

When the software download is complete, the following screen appears.

The downloaded software has been installed as a dormant file.

If your SYSCTL was factory-fresh, the downloaded software has been installed as a dormant file and will be applied automatically. The initial software installation is a two-part process, totalling approximately 70 minutes. The first part, download of the software (INS-PRGM), takes approximately 60 minutes. The second part, the reset of the shelf and the automatic apply/activation of the downloaded software (apply), takes approximately 10 minutes.

View the figure

After INS-PRGM completes and the dormant generic is applied, the SYSCTL LEDs cycle through the following transitions while the SYSCTL resets.

  • CR/MJ LED extinguishes

  • MN/ABN LED and ACO/TST LED simultaneously light for approximately 12 seconds and then extinguish

  • MN/ABN LED and ACO/TST LED simultaneously light for approximately 8 seconds and then extinguish

  • CR/MJ LED flashes eleven times

  • All LEDs remain extinguished; the reset is complete.

8

Exit the Term program using ALT+F2. Continue with Step 9.

9

Important!

Do NOT insert a new circuit pack in the shelf until after you apply the new software generic and clear the dormant/exec version mismatch condition.

Was your SYSCTL factory-fresh?

If...

Then...

Yes

The software will be automatically applied. Wait 10 minutes for the system to reset after the apply and proceed to Step 11.

No

Continue with Step 10.

10

To verify that the download and apply were successful, establish a WaveStar® CIT session (specifying either OSI or Serial in the Connection Type: field) and re-log in to your Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf.

Result:

The title bars of the System View and the legal notice should both reflect the current NE software generic, for example: R7.2.2.

Procedure 14-2: Connect personal computer (PC) and establish WaveStar® CIT session

11

Important!

Do NOT insert a new circuit pack in the shelf until after you apply the new software generic and clear the dormant/exec version mismatch condition.

Do you wish to apply (activate) the software generic that you recently downloaded to the dormant area of the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 shelf?

If...

Then...

Yes

Proceed to Procedure 2-10: Apply software generic and then continue with Step 12.

No

Continue with Step 12.

12

Is this software generic to be installed on other nodes in this network?

If...

Then...

Yes

Proceed to Procedure 2-9: Software generic copy and upgrade to a remote shelf.

No

STOP! End of Procedure.
