Procedure 9-6: Establish dual-homed network

- Overview

Use this procedure to establish dual-homed OC-3/12/48 access to host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes in a network backbone ring.

Figure 9-6, Dual-Homed network configuration example 1 and Figure 9-7, Dual-Homed network configuration example 2 show example network configurations with dual-homed access to a network backbone ring. This allows the dual-homed ring to be completed through the network backbone ring. The UPSR backbone ring transports/drops traffic from the dual-homed ring. The end-of-path network elements that drop the traffic perform path protection switching.

This procedure assumes that dual-homed access is established by interconnecting Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes using a Function/Growth slot at two host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes and the OC-3/12/48 Main slot pair of the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes in the dual-homed ring. However, the Function/Growth slots of the two host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes may also be connected in a dual-homed ring with the following:

  • Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX (OC-3/12/48 Main slot pair or Function/Growth slot pair): If connecting to an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX, refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer (DMX) User Operations Guide, 365-372-301 as required, when performing this procedure.

  • Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 (OC-3/12 Main slot pair): If connecting to an Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5, refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS-5) User Provisioning Guide, 365-372-401, as required, when performing this procedure.

  • Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXplore OC-3/12 Main slot pair. If connecting to an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXplore, refer to the Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Explore (DMXplore) User Operations Guide, 365-372-332, as required, when performing this procedure.

  • Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend (OC-3/12/48 Function/Growth slot pair): If connecting to the Function/Growth slots of another Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend, refer to Procedure 9-7: Establish subtending low-speed UPSR, as required, when performing this procedure.

Important!

If the Main slots at the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes are equipped with Very Large Fabric LNW84 or LNW141 OLIU circuit packs, dual-homed access is supported using 0x1 (recommended) or UPSR port applications.

If the Main slots at the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes are not equipped with Very Large Fabric LNW84 or LNW141 OLIU circuit packs, dual-homed access is supported using the 0x1S1 and 0x1S2 or UPSR port applications.

If the port application is UPSR, then the cross-connection channel application must be UNSWITCHED. This configuration is essentially the same as establishing a subtending UPSR ring [ Procedure 9-7: Establish subtending low-speed UPSR], except for the cross-connection applications.

Ignore all alarms until procedure is complete.

- Privilege level

You must log in as either a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

In addition to the equipment listed in Required equipment, the following equipment is also required:

  • Optical power meter

  • Lightguide jumpers

  • Lightguide buildouts (LBOs)

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Before you begin and Required equipment in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  3. Verify that you have the necessary work instructions detailing the slots, circuit packs, ports, and network element parameters to be used for this procedure.

  4. Verify that the network backbone ring containing the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes is established and operating properly.

  5. Verify that all systems being connected to the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes have been equipped and are operating properly.

Steps

Complete the following steps to establish dual-homed OC-3/12/48 access to host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes in a network backbone ring.

1

From your work instructions, determine the network configuration. Refer to Figure 9-6, Dual-Homed network configuration example 1 and Figure 9-7, Dual-Homed network configuration example 2 for examples. If possible, make a sketch of the existing network backbone ring and the required dual-homed connections.

If required, select the Administration → OSI Neighbor Map command at the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node and note the NEs connected to Main 1 and Main 2.

Access each NE identified, select the Administration → OSI Neighbor Map command, and note the NEs connected to Main 1 and Main 2.

Repeat this step until the network backbone ring can be sketched.

2

Important!

Two or more shelves in the same network cannot have the same TID.

Using the work instructions and office records, verify that no duplicate TID settings exist between the nodes in the existing network backbone ring and the dual-homed ring. If duplicate TID settings exist, determine new settings and at each site with duplicate TID settings, select Administration → Set TID from the System View menu, and enter new TID settings.

Reference:

Procedure 7-11: Set/change system TID

3

If required, modify the network service access point (NSAP) address and/or enable Level 2 routing capabilities at the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes and the nodes in the dual-homed ring.

Reference:

Procedure 7-13: Provision network layer 3 parameters

4

At the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes, refer to Nodes 4 and 5 in Figure 9-6, Dual-Homed network configuration example 1 and Figure 9-7, Dual-Homed network configuration example 2, verify/install OLIU circuit packs and/or pluggable transmission modules in the required Function/Growth slot being used for access according to the work instructions.

Important!

If the work instructions or office records do not specify OLIU types, refer to Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Applications and Planning Guide, 365-372-324, for a description of OLIU circuit packs, pluggable transmission modules, and applications. Optical line power measurements and/or office records must be used to verify that the span length can be supported.

To establish dual-homed access using UPSR interfaces, Function/Growth slot 1 must be used at one host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node, and Function/Growth slot 2 must be used at the other host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend node.

The companion Function/Growth slot at the host nodes may be:

  • unequipped (no circuit pack installed)

  • equipped with a protection OLIU circuit pack and companion port with no cable connected

  • equipped with a protection OLIU circuit pack and the companion socket is unequipped.

  • equipped with a different type 0x1 compatible circuit pack (when Very Large Fabric LNW84 or LNW141 OLIU circuit packs are in the Main slots)

  • equipped with the same type 0x1 compatible circuit pack and the companion port is used for a different 0x1 application (when Very Large Fabric LNW84 or LNW141 OLIU circuit packs are in the Main slots)

Important!

If OSI over DCC is enabled for ports, an inconsistent DCC values alarm is reported when the ports are looped back.

If required at the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes, clear the inconsistent DCC values alarm by disabling OSI over DCC for the required ports. From the System View menu, select Configuration → DCC Terminations and disable OSI Over DCC for the required DCC ports.

Procedure 6-4: Provision DCC terminations

6

Important!

If the Main slots are equipped with Very Large Fabric LNW84 or LNW141 OLIU circuit packs, provision the Application parameter to 0x1 (recommended) or UPSR for all ports used for dual-homed access.

If the Main slots are not equipped with Very Large Fabric LNW84 or LNW141 OLIU circuit packs, provision the Application parameter to UPSR for all ports being connected, or provision the Application parameter of the port in Function/Growth slot 1 to 0x1S1 and the Application parameter of the port in Function/Growth slot 2 to 0x1S2.

From the System View menu at the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes, select Configuration → Equipment, select the required low-speed OC-n port, and provision the port parameters according to the work instructions.

Reference:

Procedure 4-4: Provision OLIU circuit packs/ports for service

7

At the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes, verify that the low-speed OC-n ports were provisioned correctly using the View → Equipment command.

8

Important!

If OSI over DCC is enabled, the LAPD Role parameter must be provisioned differently at each end of an optical span. For example, if the LAPD Role parameter is provisioned to user-side at one end of an optical span, then the LAPD Role parameter must be provisioned network-side at the other end of the optical span.

From the System View menu at the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes, select Configuration → DCC Terminations and provision the DCC terminations for the required DCC ports according to the work instructions.

Result:

If OSI over DCC is enabled, an inconsistent DCC values alarm will occur if the OC-n ports are looped back.

Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Alarm Messages and Trouble Clearing Guide, 365-372-326

15

If required, repeat this procedure from Step 1 to establish dual-homed access at other host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes in the network backbone ring.

16

Important!

Establishing service requires that the proper slots in each terminating node be properly equipped with the correct circuit pack(s) for the type of service being established. It also requires numerous cross-connections in each of the nodes representing the path of the required service. Additionally, transmission tests should be performed to verify the continuity and quality of the established circuit.

The dual-homed access network is now complete and ready for service to be established.

Configuration

The example in Figure 9-6, Dual-Homed network configuration example 1 shows an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend backbone ring consisting of Nodes 1, 2, 4, and 5. Nodes 4 and 5 provide dual-homed access to the backbone ring for Nodes 7 and 8. Notice that Node 9 is actually single homed to Node 2 in this example.

The host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes support OC-3/12/48 dual-homed access in Function slots D or G only.

The dual-homed nodes could be an Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend, Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMX, Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5, Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXplore, or any system supporting OC-3/12/48 configurations.

The example in Figure 9-7, Dual-Homed network configuration example 2 shows Nodes 4 and 5 providing dual-homed access to Nodes 7 and 8.

At the host Alcatel-Lucent 1665 DMXtend nodes, the port Application parameter for the low-speed OC-n ports that provide dual-homed access to the backbone ring must be provisioned using one of the following methods.

Traffic Flow Example

In Figure 9-6, Dual-Homed network configuration example 1, if Node 7 is the source and Node 9 is the destination, traffic will flow as follows when the proper cross-connections are made:

The Function/Growth ports provisioned 0x1Sn or 0x1 may be cross-connected to the circuit pack in the Main 1 or Main 2 slot. A Function/Growth port in Function/Growth slot 1 provisioned UPSR must be cross-connected to the circuit pack in the Main 1 slot, and a Function/Growth port in Function/Growth slot 2 provisioned UPSR must be cross-connected to the circuit pack in the Main 2 slot.

Protection

The dual-homed configuration transports traffic through the network backbone ring without any protection switching by the host nodes or pass-through nodes on the network backbone ring. The UPSR terminating nodes perform the path protection switching.
