Procedure 4-22: Replace low-speed circuit pack with different type low-speed circuit pack

- Overview

Use this procedure to replace:

  • one unprotected out-of-service low-speed circuit pack in a Function/Growth group with a different type low-speed circuit pack.

  • two protected out-of-service low-speed circuit packs in a Function/Growth group with a different type low-speed circuit pack(s).

For in-service upgrades, refer to Chapter 12, Ring and circuit pack upgrade procedures.

- Privilege level

You must log in as a Privileged user to complete this procedure.

Required equipment

The following equipment is required to perform this procedure:

  • Wrist Strap

  • Replacement low-speed circuit pack(s)

NOTICE

Equipment damage

Rocking circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them can damage circuit pack and/or shelf connectors.

Do not rock circuit packs back and forth when removing or installing them. Carefully slide circuit packs into or out of the shelf slot.

DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

Removing or installing circuit packs during a System Reset can cause system errors.

Do not remove or install a circuit pack during a System Reset. If a System Reset occurs, wait until the System Reset is complete, then remove or install the circuit pack.

- Before you begin

Prior to performing this procedure:

  1. Refer to Required equipment and Before you begin in this chapter.

  2. Refer to Laser safety and Electrostatic discharge in Chapter 1, Safety.

  3. Obtain the work instructions for this procedure.

  4. Review the applicable Alcatel-Lucent 1665 Data Multiplexer Extend (DMXtend) Software Release Description for any detailed procedures or cautions that may apply to this procedure.

Steps

Complete the following steps to replace an out-of-service low-speed circuit pack with a different type low-speed circuit pack.

1

DANGER

NOTICE

Service-disruption hazard

Removing a low-speed circuit pack with active traffic may result in a service interruption.

Ensure that ALL service is removed from the affected low-speed circuit pack before continuing.

From the System View, select View → Cross-Connections to obtain a current list of cross-connections and verify that no cross-connections exist on the low-speed circuit pack(s) to be removed.

If required, select Configuration → Cross-Connections to access the Cross-Connection Wizard and delete any existing cross-connections.

3

Open the faceplate latches on the affected low-speed circuit pack and remove the circuit pack from the shelf.

Result:

The system reports a CP removed alarm for the affected slot.

If required, repeat this step for the companion circuit pack in the Function/Growth group.

4

Select Configuration → Update System → Update All.

Result:

The CP removed alarm(s) clears for the affected slot(s).

The affected slot(s) appears empty (circuit pack is not shown) in the WaveStar® CIT System View.

5

Install the replacement low-speed circuit pack(s) in the affected slot(s).

Important!

It is recommended that the network element database be backed up to a remote OS (for example, the OMS) after the circuit pack is replaced. This creates a current backup copy that includes the replacement circuit pack. The remote OS could use this backup copy to restore the network element database in the event of a catastrophic failure. Attempts to restore the network element database using a backup copy created prior to replacing the circuit pack may result in circuit pack failures.

Back up the network element database using Configuration → Software → Remote Backup.
